More dancing isn’t always the answer. Sometimes, the missing piece is strength.
We love hearing stories like this from our families. Strength training helps dancers build the stability, power, and body awareness needed to support their technique, reduce injury risk, and perform at their highest level.
Watching young dancers gain confidence, not just in their dancing, but in their understanding of how their bodies move and function, is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

Dancers, what should your summer look like so you are prepared to peak during your competition or performance season next year? Lean into Periodization! The secret training schedule elite athletes use to perform their best when it matters most.

The goal is to match training to the demands of the season:
• Off-Season: Focus on building general strength and non-dance conditioning.
• Pre-Season: Focus on technique while gradually building dance-specific strength and endurance.
• In-Season: Focus on performance while reducing excess physical stress.
• Post-Season: Prioritize rest and recovery with a complete break from dance activities.

The challenge? Most dancers rarely get a long enough off-season, which means the body often doesn’t get the recovery time it needs to fully heal, rebuild, and adapt. When a true post-season or pre-season isn’t possible, active recovery and non-dance-specific training become even more important. Active recovery doesn’t mean doing nothing. It means giving your body a different stimulus while reducing the repetitive stress of dance.

Meet Lauryn, BS! She holds a Bachelors of Science in Exercise Science with a concentration in Strength and Conditioning. As a dancer herself, she recognizes that dance strength and conditioning and specific rehabilitation was an underdeveloped field and knew that was something she wanted to pursue.

In addition, she is currently an award winning choreographer and a Tap instructor at Reyha Dance Center. She also teaches their stretch and strengthen program where she aims to educate the dancers on the importance of joint mobility. This role has given her firsthand experience into the importance of training for injury prevention for young dancers and how it can affect their training later in life.

She is passionate about bringing the strength and conditioning world and the dance world together to create awareness over how important it is for dancers to partake in preventative care. Lauryn will begin seeing clients on June 5th and will specialize in working with adolescent dancers and artistic athletes.

Flexibility and Mobility are not the same, Flexibility is being able to get into a position. Mobility is being able to control it. If you are flexible but cannot use that range of motion while dancing, it’s time to strengthen your end ranges. At Performance Pilates and Rehab we help dancers and artistic athletes access their end ranges through strength training.

Being flexible doesn’t automatically mean the body is stable.
When the body moves into ranges it cannot properly control, it will start finding other ways to create support.
Often, the answer isn’t more stretching, it’s building the strength and coordination needed to support those ranges safely. The body will always choose protection first, which is why control and stability are just as important as flexibility.

Being flexible doesn’t automatically mean the body is stable.
When the body moves into ranges it cannot properly control, it will start finding other ways to create support. For dancers, this may look like gripping through the hip flexors or low back, forcing turnout through the feet, hanging into joints, or feeling constantly “tight” even with a large range of motion.
Often, the answer isn’t more stretching, it’s building the strength and coordination needed to support those ranges safely. The body will always choose protection first, which is why control and stability are just as important as flexibility.
