Researchers in Japan are actively developing and clinical-testing an experimental drug designed to regrow teeth, though it is not yet publicly available.
The Science Behind the Drug
Target Protein: The medicine (known as TRG-035) is an antibody treatment that targets a specific protein called USAG-1.
Dormant Buds: USAG-1 normally suppresses tooth growth. Researchers discovered that blocking this protein can reactivate dormant tooth buds—a hidden third set of potential teeth that humans and many mammals carry in their jaws but fail to develop naturally.
Animal Testing: Preclinical trials conducted on mice and ferrets successfully triggered the growth of new, fully functional teeth.
Current Status of Human Trials
Phase I Trials: Led by researchers from Kyoto University Hospital and the startup Toregem BioPharma, initial human safety trials began. These early tests focused primarily on safety and dosage in healthy adult participants rather than immediately verifying widespread regrowth.
Next Steps: Future trials aim to expand to young children with congenital tooth absence (anodontia), before eventually studying broader applications for adults who lost teeth due to injury or decay.
Expected Timeline: The research team hopes to make the treatment commercially available around 2030 if safety and effectiveness continue to clear clinical hurdles.
