New EKG regulations for high school student athletes in the state of Florida catch a potentially fatal arrhythmia.

Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome is a condition where the natural electrical signals of the heart take a shortcut leading to rapid, irregular rhythms. Often asymptomatic and undiagnosed until symptoms of rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, chest pain, or dizziness present. Scary is that sometimes there are no previous symptoms until the tragedy occurs.

A telltale sign on routine electrocardiogram, the delta wave, can demonstrate this shortcut pathway. Finding this can be life-saving.

An ECG test revealed that a local 14-year-old had an undiagnosed heart condition known as Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome, which can cause the heart to beat out of rhythm and trigger sudden cardiac arrest.

"Identifying Medical Bu****it" by Andrew J Foy

Something all doctors, PA's, and NP's should read. Critical thinking is an absolute must for providing patients with the best information for shared decision-making in their medical care. Direct-to-consumer marketing can sometimes be misleading. Peer-reviewed medical articles can even be misleading. I'd argue the 2 biggest sources of BS today comes from online influencers promoting a product or health claim, and selective bias with internet searching. With the internet and AI, if someone really wants to be convinced that eating cow patties has health benefits I wouldn't be surprised if Grok scrounges up information to agree with that person.

The greatest tool we have as medical professionals and society is critical thinking. It's quick and effortless to abstain from critical thinking, but by doing so one could be duped into taking the new latest and greatest probiotic from 100% organic Bu****itococcus smoothbranium.

GLP-1Ra use and reduction in knee replacement surgeries?!?!

A recent peer-reviewed study found that Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) significantly reduce the long-term risk of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in patients with knee osteoarthritis. The effect was more pronounced with longer treatment durations and newer generation agents like semaglutide or tirzepatide, suggesting a potential disease-modifying activity beyond weight loss.

It makes sense that with weight reduction in people who are overweight or obese that there will be less stress transmitted through the joints (approximately 4 pounds of pressure reduction for each pound of weight loss). These GLP-1Ra's are also being evaluated for metabolic reductions of inflammation in the body.

PLATELET-RICH PLASMA (PRP)!

I had the privilege to attend a conference in Denver, CO this last week, meeting with sports medicine physician experts in the field of platelet-rich plasma treatments for musculoskeletal conditions. Over the years more data and research regarding PRP treatments for ailments such as osteoarthritis and soft tissue injuries (tendonitis, partial tears, strains, bursitis) have shown the healing benefits of PRP for these issues. Furthermore we're seeing that PRP is safer with healing AND longer duration of relief than other standard treatments such as steroid injections.

I have the opportunity in my new office to continue providing PRP injections for musculoskeletal ailments, and accurately perform all injections with ultrasound guidance. I'm proud of the results my patients have received and looking forward to continuing this regenerative treatment!

Bean meaning to tell you about beans...

Those who've met me in the medical clinic have heard me talk about food. All the time. I love food. And the right nourishment does wonders for your health.

Today I've come across a meta-analysis and systematic review article regarding legumes and hypertension. Research performed at this level is regarded as the highest level of evidence because it requires robust comprehensive and relevant studies to synthesize the results.

Nutritionally beans and soy are packed with plant protein, dietary fiber, potassium, magnesium, and anti-oxidant polyphenols and isoflavones; all things that promote a healthy cardiovascular system. Additionally compounds in beans influence blood vessel dilation, leading to blood-pressure lowering effects.

Look to add 1 cup (approx 100 grams) of cooked beans, chickpeas, lentils, soybeans, or peas regularly in your diet to reap the health benefits on your blood pressure and cardiovascular health.

📣📣📣NEW OFFICE!!!!📣📣📣
I'm proud to announce the start of my direct primary care practice in Palencia with Shield Health Solutions! 312 Paseo Reyes Dr, St Augustine, FL 32095.

✨ A New Chapter in Patient-Centered Care ✨

I’m excited to announce that I’m launching a family medicine practice alongside an incredible team — with one clear mission: to provide exceptional, personalized care to our community.

As a board-certified physician in Family Medicine, Sports Medicine, and Obesity Medicine, I’m here to care for you and your family at every stage of life:

✅ Annual physicals & preventive care
✅ Diagnosis and management of acute & chronic medical conditions
✅ Treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and joint pain
✅ Therapy plans, medications, and ultrasound-guided injections
✅ Evidence-based weight loss and long-term weight management

I’ve spent decades training, learning, and caring for patients (yes… aging myself a bit 😄). The greatest privilege of my career has been earning my patients’ trust — and advocating for their health every single day.

After much thought, I made the decision to step away from insurance-driven and corporate medicine. Today’s healthcare system often limits the time, access, and attention patients truly deserve.

This new practice allows me to return to what matters most — putting the Patient first.
More time. Better access. Personalized care. A true doctor-patient relationship.

I’m grateful to now practice medicine the way I was trained to practice — and the way I believe healthcare should be.

📣 Now accepting new patients!
If you’re looking for comprehensive, relationship-based family medicine care, I would be honored to care for you and your family.

The Link Between Obesity and Cancer: Why Your Weight Matters, Let's Reduce It!

Did you know that maintaining a healthy weight is crucial for reducing your cancer risk? Recent research highlights the significant connection between obesity and various types of cancer. Obesity is associated with an increased risk of at least 12 types of cancer, including endometrial, esophageal, gastric, kidney, colorectal, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, prostate, postmenopausal breast, ovarian, and thyroid cancers.

How Does Obesity Promotes Cancer?
Excess adipose tissue (body fat) contributes to inflammation, hormonal changes, immune system dysfunction, and is associated with altered gut microbiome. All these factors can contribute to stress in the body that directly or indirectly promote tumor growth

Inflammation: Adipose tissue (body fat) dysfunction leads to chronic inflammation and increased levels of inflammatory mediators that can directly or indirectly promote tumor growth.

Hormonal Changes: Obesity can alter hormone production, such as increasing estrogen and leptin levels while decreasing adiponectin. High estrogen levels can fuel hormone-sensitive cancers like breast, ovarian, and endometrial cancers.

Immune System Dysfunction: Obesity can impair the immune system's ability to recognize and eliminate cancer cells by affecting immune cell function and accumulating immunosuppressive cells

Gut Microbiome Alterations: Obesity can deplete beneficial gut bacteria and promote the overgrowth of harmful bacteria, contributing to inflammation and oxidative stress that can lead to cancer

The Importance of Weight Loss
Reducing Cancer Risk: Losing weight can significantly reduce cancer risk by lessening the adverse effects of obesity. Studies show that losing more than 10% of body weight can lead to modest reductions in obesity-associated cancer incidence

Interventions: Weight loss can be achieved through lifestyle modifications (diet and exercise), medications, or bariatric surgery. Data from bariatric surgery has been associated with a 32% reduction in the incidence of obesity-associated cancers. Medications like GLP-1 receptor agonists have also shown promise in reducing the risk of certain obesity-associated cancers.

It's best to maintain a healthy weight is a powerful way to protect yourself. Let's prioritize healthy habits together!
