This room is filled with people celebrating the release of Book of the Silenced. But few years years ago (then again last month!), I was sitting on a cold hospital floor, praying my son would just wake up, come out of coma on his own. We fought a medical system that called our son’s diagnosis ‘impossible’—until they couldn’t ignore the facts anymore. This book is a war journal. It’s for every parent who was told they were ‘difficult’ when they were just fighting for their child’s life. Thank you for standing with us.

Under the Bridge

I walk under a bridge
that lets the sunlight through.
Patterns fall across my arms
like old maps.

Above me, traffic trusts
steel and forward motion.
Below, the river remembers
every name it has been given
and answers to none.

Where the shadow is longest,
the water is already elsewhere,
moved
by what cannot be seen.

I have brought fear with me,
folded small, almost polite,
like a letter I never meant to send.
I set it adrift.
The river takes it,
unfolds it downstream
where even forgetting is forgiven.

On the bank, I wait for an answer
that isn’t an answer—
only sunlight returning,
bridge and river unchanged,
except I have become
the current, the crossing,

Bread for Morning Birds

There is a moment before the knock
when your hand stills
and you do not know why.

I have asked for small kindnesses
during storms I couldn’t name,
hoping not to break
in the same place twice.

What I need arrives strangely:
heat blooming in a sleeve
I don’t recall wearing,
a seed pressed into my palm
by someone I can’t remember.

Rivers do this:
they bend before the sea,
trusting a path they cannot see.

I place desire
on the windowsill of the unseen,
like bread left for morning birds,
and walk away—
leaving crumbs in my palm,
wondering if what I gave was ever mine to keep.

Tonight, I hear the faint beat of wings,
and the silence that follows
fits, at last,
like something I might one day call peace
