⚾️ PLANTAR FASCIITIS: YES, EVEN PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES GET IT! ⚾️
If you watched the Cleveland Guardians vs. Detroit Tigers game, you may have heard Kerry Carpenter discussed in relation to plantar fasciitis. It’s a great reminder that heel pain doesn’t discriminate—even athletes performing at the highest level can develop problems with the plantar fascia. 🏆
So, what exactly is plantar fasciitis? 🦶
The plantar fascia is a strong band of tissue running along the bottom of your foot, connecting your heel toward your toes. When this tissue becomes overloaded and irritated, it can cause the familiar sharp pain underneath the heel—often especially noticeable with those first few steps in the morning. 🚶🏼♀️
Approximately 1 in 10 people will experience plantar fasciitis during their lifetime, making it one of the most common causes of heel pain. 👣
And here’s something we really want our patients to know:
👉 Treatment doesn’t necessarily mean injections, surgery, or simply “living with it.”
For many patients, a structured rehabilitation program—including stretching, strengthening, and gradually improving the foot and ankle’s ability to tolerate load—can be extremely effective. Many of these exercises can be performed right at home once you’ve been shown how to do them properly. Current physical therapy guidelines specifically recommend plantar-fascia and calf stretching along with therapeutic strengthening of the foot and ankle. 🧊
Kerry Carpenter’s situation is also a good reminder that not every case of heel pain is exactly the same. His recent left-foot problem was significant enough to place him on the 10-day injured list, and MLB reported that his symptoms developed in the setting of a previous heel bruise and were particularly bothersome while running. 🏃🏾♀️
Whether you’re a professional athlete, weekend warrior, or simply trying to get through your day without heel pain, your feet are taking a tremendous amount of stress. 🍎
Don’t ignore persistent heel pain. The sooner we identify what’s actually causing it, the sooner we can develop the right treatment and rehabilitation plan for you. 👟
