"Oh man, my supervisor sent me a text wanting to see me first thing in the morning. I must be fired!! I'm going to be fired and then lose my house because I can't pay the mortgage without a job."
Can you relate to the above thought? This is what we call "catastrophizing". Catastrophizing is when our brain automatically jumps to the worst possible outcome of a situation without us genuinely having any proof. Why would our brains do this to us?! Our brains do this to PROTECT us and keep us safe. Think of it as a warning siren!
Generally people who have experienced traumatic events in the past or suffer from severe anxiety automatically catastrophize situations, a learned behavior that our brains picked up on in order to help us prepare to handle the worst possible outcome.
The good thing about it being a learned behavior? We can change it! AHHCC can help you re-wire your automatic thoughts through processed such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and help you process past trauma through EMDR trauma therapy!
Together, we can minimize catastrophizing thoughts and help our brains think more rationally.
