It was 65 years ago this month (May 1961) that the last original employee retired who had been at St. Cloud Hospital since its opening in 1928.

Herman Schneider first learned about Minnesota from his aunt, Sister Placida Heine, OSB, when she was visiting Germany. She spoke to her young nephews about opportunities in America, and mentioned that she needed an engineer at St. Joseph's Home in St. Cloud.

Herman immigrated in 1907 at the age of 15 and trained under experienced engineers at St. Joseph's Home, St. Raphael's Hospital, St. John's University and the St. Cloud Reformatory. In 1927, he accepted the job of chief engineer at the soon-to-be-opened St. Cloud Hospital and he held that position until his retirement in 1961.

In 1929 there were eight employees in the physical plant of the hospital under his supervision and by the early 1950s, there were 28. Herman is shown here explaining the boiler operation to hospital administrator Sister Francis Xavier Forster, OSB, in 1953.

His retirement announcement noted that "His devotion to and respect for his Benedictine aunt have been extended to the many Benedictines he has worked with since his arrival in St. Cloud. His years of self-sacrificing service have made him an unforgettable figure in the history of the St. Cloud Hospital."

Your safety is at the center of everything we do.

We’re proud to share that CentraCare - St. Cloud Hospital earned an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national recognition based on how well we protect patients from preventable harm.

This reflects the care you can expect when you’re with us — strong infection prevention practices, careful attention to medication safety, and ongoing work to reduce medical errors.

We’re grateful for the teams who show up every day committed to safe, compassionate care for you and your loved ones. And while this recognition matters, it doesn’t mean we’re finished. We’re continuously learning, improving, and holding ourselves accountable so you can feel confident in the care you receive here.

In honor of Nurses Week and to recognize the wonderful care his wife received from the Coborn Cancer Center nurses while she battled ovarian cancer, Wayne Richardson drops off handwritten thank you cards each year for the nurses in memory of his wife.

Wayne also volunteers in the Cancer Center and wears his signature pink wig and t-shirt, when he volunteers in October. Wayne is pictured with Laura Eggert.

Thank you, Wayne, for this thoughtful gesture and for your time spent volunteering to help our staff, the patients and their caregivers.

Happy Nurses Week to all nurses and thank you for the compassionate care you provide every day!
