Take action now to advocate for funding

🚨 The proposed House Labor-HHS bill isn't just bad policy — it's a direct attack on people living with and affected by HIV. 🚨

Cutting $794 million from HIV prevention at CDC. Slashing $225 million from Ryan White. Eliminating programs that save lives.

This comes on top of Medicaid cuts and rising health insurance costs. Our communities are already struggling — these cuts would be catastrophic.

Last year, your voices stopped these cuts. We need that same energy now.

Tell your members of Congress: Reject these unconscionable cuts and pass a bill that actually meets the needs of our communities. Head to bit.ly/reject-fy27-cuts to take action now.

⚠️ OVERDOSE ALERT: 23 SUSPECTED OVERDOSES, 2 SUSPECTED FATAL OVERDOSES IN DAKOTA COUNTY 4 DAY SPAN⚠️

Health and public safety officials are urging residents to remain vigilant after a sharp increase in suspected overdoses across Dakota County over the past several days.

Between May 29 and June 2, authorities report there have been 23 suspected overdoses and two suspected fatal overdoses within Dakota County.

Officials are warning that any street drug should be considered potentially dangerous, as fentanyl and other powerful synthetic substances continue to be found in a wide variety of illicit drugs. In many cases, people may not know the substances they are using contain fentanyl until it is too late.

Community members are encouraged to check on friends, family members, and loved ones who may be struggling with substance use or who may be at risk of an overdose.

Know the signs of a possible overdose:

• Person cannot be awakened or is unresponsive
• Slow, shallow, or stopped breathing
• Blue or gray lips, fingertips, or skin
• Gurgling, choking, or unusual breathing sounds
• Loss of consciousness

If you suspect an overdose:

• Call 911 immediately
• Administer naloxone (Narcan) if available
• Stay with the person until emergency responders arrive
• Do not assume they will “sleep it off”

Officials are strongly encouraging anyone who uses substances, or who knows someone who does, to carry naloxone. Narcan can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose and save a life when administered quickly.

This increase in overdoses serves as a reminder that the ongoing fentanyl crisis continues to impact communities across Minnesota, affecting people of all ages, backgrounds, and neighborhoods.

Please share this information. It could save a life.

HIV Vaccine Awareness Day (HVAD) recognizes the many volunteers, community members, health professionals, and scientists working together to develop a vaccine that can prevent HIV. It is also an opportunity to educate communities about the importance of preventive HIV vaccine research. Observed each year on May 18, this day honors U.S. President Bill Clinton’s 1997 statement that “only a truly effective, preventive HIV vaccine can limit and eventually eliminate the threat of AIDS.”

Vaccines are a critical but often overlooked component of comprehensive HIV prevention and care, and people living with HIV face unique vulnerabilities that make equitable vaccine access a matter of life and death.

This new factsheet examines the barriers standing between PLWH and the vaccines they need, and outlines the federal policy priorities NMAC believes are essential to closing that gap.
