Just a shout out to you fathers/husbands/partners. Lately, I have been so impressed
with the caliber of men that I have encountered.
One husband was busily filling the birthing tub. I said I don’t think we will have time
for that because she said she feels like pushing. He said I will do whatever it takes to
bring her some comfort---You know what? It was finished in time for a beautiful water
birth. Championing for her comfort. So impressed.
Another husband listened to his wife speaking about her fears about childbirth during
an office visit. I turned to him and asked for his opinion. He looked at his wife and
said, I know you, I’ve been with you with each of our children. You are strong enough!
Don’t ever doubt that! Wow! Just wow!
After a discussion of whether to hire a doula for the birth, a first-time dad said, I
would like to feel like I could support her all by myself, but this isn’t about me, it is
about what she needs.
You men are more important than you know-to your wives/partners and children.

This amazing thing happened at our office today…. A client (call her Amanda) who was moving back to New York, happened to overhear another client explain that she had really difficult trials facing her in the coming weeks. After the client left, Amanda told Gina that she wanted to pay off the amount remaining for the client’s birth. Amanda paid $600 for that client! What an act of amazingly generous kindness! Safe journey home Amanda! We love you and will not forget this incredible unselfish act!

Nothing I like better than catching a postpartum mother “being good”! Remember postpartum is daytime naps and nighttime naps. That perspective can change your attitude about the sleep deprivation of those early postpartum days.

While attending a birth this weekend, I witnessed an amazing woman birth with such grace it brought us all in attendance to tears. Her most used phrase was- “I am so excited! I am going to be holding my baby soon!” When those last contractions just before pushing became so almost unbearably strong, she would say-“I love these powerful contractions cuz I know he’s almost here”. The blessing of experience and perspective. Interpreting her body’s sensations in such a positive way made her journey a joy. Such a great reminder for life. I’m always learning from my Mommas.

So very wonderful....

So very wonderful....

My top lessons in the first three weeks of fatherhood:
1. Love is the highest purpose.
2. Feminists can go to hell because a woman making a baby, birthing the baby, and then raising the child is the most powerful thing a human can do.
3. Dads are kinda cool but not inherently awesome cause they don’t have milk. Try not to take it too personally.
4. Being pooped on isn’t so bad.
5. A solid burp can save you an hour of screaming.
6. Put the diaper on tight enough, otherwise you’ll be changing baby’s urine soaked shirt.
7. A tired mom and dad arguing is not a fun thing to be a part of, but is probably funny as hell to watch.
8. What I used to take too seriously in life now doesn’t deserve any of my attention.
9. I 100% don’t know what I’m doing as a parent, never will, but will always do my best in the moment.
10. My relationship with my wife makes up the soil in the sacred garden in which my son grows. It has to be prioritized, his growth and well-being depends on it.

More lessons to come!

As we come into the cold and flu season, many moms are looking for ways to ‘boost’ their immunity to prevent colds and flu. Toward that end, many turn to extra vitamins or other dietary supplements and herbs.

It is important to understand the drawbacks of these products. Since 1994, these products have been regulated as if they are foods. They have to prove they do not contain bacteria, such as salmonella, e coli, etc. They do not have to prove safety beyond that. They are supposed to list all ingredients, active or otherwise. They do not, however, have to disclose the dose, part of the plant or any other specifics about the ingredients. For more on this go to: https://mothertobaby.org/fact-sheets/herbal-products-pregnancy/

Because of this loose regulation, the labels of dietary supplements, herbs, etc., are often inaccurate. The last time the Poison Centers across the country tested them, the lowest rate at which the labeling was wrong was 60% of the time. And individual brands and individual products within those brands could be as high as 98% inaccurate.

This is the main reason these products can’t be studied for safety in pregnancy or breastfeeding. No one actually knows what’s in them. From one bottle to the next, they can contain different ingredients. In the same bottle, each pill or capsule can contain different ingredients.

At MotherToBaby Utah, we explain this issue to our clients when they ask about any of these products. We get questions about dietary supplements or herbs at least once a day; usually more than once.
