✨ Now Welcoming New Clients! ✨

We’re excited to welcome Nicholas Woodruff-Sims, LPC to our practice, who specializes in working with neurodivergent populations, including autism and ADHD, especially those who receive a diagnosis later in life.

Nicholas uses exploratory techniques to help clients understand their condition, and how it affects their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Additionally, he assists in communication development to help clients meet their needs safely and effectively. Nicholas understands that mental health and wellness looks different for each individual and the treatment should reflect that.

Additional clinical interests include anxiety, anger, communication skills, executive functioning, trauma, PTSD, masking/bridging, grief, CBT, DBT skills, psychoeducation, behavior change, and narrative therapy.

🎉 Nicholas will begin seeing clients in person at our Robbinsdale clinic and via telehealth on September 1, 2026!

If you or someone you know (ages 13+) is looking for support with neurodivergence, anxiety, trauma, grief, or other mental health concerns, Nicholas may be a great fit.

In 1972, a psychiatrist named John E. Fryer took an extraordinary risk that helped change the course of mental health history.

At the American Psychiatric Association annual meeting, he spoke under the pseudonym “Dr. H. Anonymous.” At the time, homos*xuality was still classified as a mental disorder in the DSM, shaping how clinicians diagnosed and treated LGBTQ people in deeply harmful ways.

Fryer stood before his peers and described what it was like to be a gay psychiatrist working in that system—choosing anonymity because speaking openly could have ended his career.

His testimony didn’t just challenge assumptions. It helped open the door to change.

Just one year later, in 1973, homos*xuality was removed from the DSM as a mental disorder—a landmark shift in psychiatry and a turning point in how medicine understands s*xual orientation.

History often moves because someone decides the personal risk is worth it.

John E. Fryer was one of those people.

Child Therapy & Teen Therapy Insights for Summer Transitions

When school ends, the biggest change for children and teens is not freedom—it’s structure.

From a developmental and clinical perspective, school functions as a daily regulatory system. It organizes sleep, social interaction, physical activity, cognitive demands, and adult supervision into predictable cycles. When that system disappears during summer break, children and adolescents are not simply “out of school”—they are operating with significantly fewer external anchors that support behavior and emotional regulation.

This transition is often underestimated by parents.

Clinically, summer is not neutral. It is a period where existing challenges in mood, behavior, attention, and coping strategies often become more noticeable—not because problems begin in summer, but because the structure that previously supported regulation is reduced.

05/05/2026

Oppositional Defiant Disorder is a behavioral and emotional condition most commonly diagnosed in childhood, characterized by a persistent pattern of irritability, argumentativeness, defiance toward authority figures, and difficulty regulating anger. Traditionally, it has been understood as a childhood disorder tied closely to parent-child and school dynamics.

But in recent years, ODD has been discussed more broadly—particularly in clinical and online spaces—as something that may have longer developmental trajectories than once assumed, including patterns that can persist into adolescence and adulthood.

This shift in conversation doesn’t mean ODD is being “redefined,” but rather that clinicians and the public are paying closer attention to how oppositional and emotional regulation patterns evolve over time.

Looking to schedule therapy? Sam Vagac, LAMFT is experienced in treating ODD and is accepting new child, teen, adult and family in-person and telehealth clients. Most insurance accepted.
