Last week, we had the opportunity to celebrate the people who make Methodist so special. Colleagues gathered for our summer appreciation event to enjoy a beautiful day, delicious food from local food trucks and time together. We’re incredibly thankful for our team and all they do to care for our patients and support one another every day.

As air quality levels remain poor in our area, people with asthma and other respiratory conditions may experience increased symptoms, including coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and chest tightness.

✦Check the air quality each day at https://bit.ly/4wltMlC or on your weather app.

✦If the air quality is listed as “unhealthy for sensitive groups” or worse, try to stay inside.

✦Keep windows and doors closed. Use air conditioning if you have it.

✦If there is smoke in the air and you need to go outside, wear a well-fitting N95 mask if you are able.

✦If ozone or smog is high, a mask will not help. Limit outdoor activity, especially during the hottest part of the day.

✦Exercise indoors when air quality is poor.

✦Use your daily controller inhaler and quick-relief inhaler exactly as prescribed. This is one of the best ways to protect your lungs.

𝐈𝐟 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐀𝐬𝐭𝐡𝐦𝐚 𝐒𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐬 𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞

✦Follow your asthma action plan if you have one. Tell someone near you that you are having trouble breathing.

✦If you do not have an asthma action plan and you use budesonide-formoterol, such as Symbicort or Breyna, or mometasone-formoterol, such as Dulera, as MART therapy: use it as your quick-relief inhaler when you have symptoms. Take 1 to 2 puffs as needed. Do not take more than 12 puffs in one day unless your care team tells you to.

✦Use a spacer or chamber with your inhaler and rinse your mouth after use.

✦If you are not using MART therapy, use your rescue inhaler as prescribed. This is often albuterol: 2 to 4 puffs as needed. You may be told to repeat this every 20 minutes up to 3 times.

✦Get medical help right away if your breathing does not improve, your symptoms are getting worse, or you are worried. Call 911 for an emergency.

Please take steps to protect your health and stay informed about local air quality conditions.

A big, green thumbs up to our sustainability team and colleagues for their ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship.

We recently earned a Greenhealth Top 25 Award from Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to environmental stewardship in health care. This is the highest honor a hospital can achieve from Practice Greenhealth and is a credit to the work that’s been done to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at Methodist.

And it’s not just us! HealthPartners earned 13 awards organization-wide, including its 12th consecutive System for Change award, three Circle of Excellence Awards for finishing in the Top 10 in three specific categories – waste, sustainable procurement and green building – and all eight hospitals received awards for sustainability achievements.

Colleagues from across HealthPartners gathered at Methodist Hospital to celebrate Juneteenth.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and serves as a time to reflect, celebrate and strengthen community.

Through rain and sunshine, colleagues made it a vibrant celebration, enjoying original songs performed by colleague Abraham Westlund, line dancing together, savoring soul food and shopping from local vendors.

These moments remind us that community is built through connection, shared experiences and a commitment to supporting one another.

We're proud to celebrate Juneteenth alongside our colleagues and community and remain committed to creating a place where everyone feels welcome, valued and included.

For some patients leaving the hospital, recovery starts with a simple question: How will I get food at home?

That reality led Methodist colleagues to think beyond screening for food insecurities. They focused on helping patients connect with community resources before they left the hospital.

In partnership with STEP--St. Louis Park Emergency Program, patients experiencing food insecurity are sent home with 2-3 days’ worth of food.

“These patients are sick and recovering, so it’s really nice for them to actually leave with something tangible they can go home with and use right away,” says Kendra, a clinical nutrition supervisor at Methodist.

Since February, we’ve handed out more than 50 food boxes.

A healthy recovery takes more than medical care. Sometimes, it starts with making sure a patient has food on the table.

We’re hosting our 5th annual Earth Week bike drive on Tuesday, April 21.

It’s one of those win-win-win opportunities.

Colleagues and community members get the chance to give old, outgrown bicycles the chance to be used again. It keeps the bikes out of landfills. And, thanks to our partnership with Express Bike Shop, a youth employment program that is part of Keystone Community Services in St. Paul, families are connected with the refurbished bikes just in time for summer.

Colleagues and community members can drop off their bike or bike part donations at Methodist Hospital on the south side of the 3900 building from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

During this National Volunteer Month, we extend a huge thank you to all the incredible people (and pets!) who freely give their time to improve our patients’ experience.

From crafters who make hats for newborns to pet therapy dog handlers to peer visitors who offer a friendly ear, we couldn’t do it without you. Thousands of volunteers put in hundreds of thousands of hours, providing kindness, caring and compassion.

Thank you, volunteers, for all you do, for our patients, families and colleagues.

If you spot a Methodist Caring Cart rolling through the halls, you’ll see Pat Croal in action.

As operations manager at the Park Nicollet Foundation, Pat launched these carts to lift spirits across the hospital. Stocked with treats, coffee, and messages of hope, they travel to every floor and department.

“It helps us say, ‘We care and thank you for your work,’” Pat says.

Pat knows the power of connection. From nurses and physicians to volunteers and administrative teams, she greets everyone by name, making people feel seen and valued.

Her career began in the lab, but Pat has always sought ways to bring people together. Volunteering, supporting leadership development, and creating opportunities for inclusion are all part of how she makes a difference every day.

“I exist at my best when I’m supporting my team and finding ways to get things done that others might not think of,” Pat says.

Pat is a partner for good, and caring isn’t just part of her job, it’s the heart of who she is.

Feeling well helps students show up, focus and fully participate in learning.

We have four school-based health centers that give students easy access to health care: Brooklyn Center High School, Burnsville Diamondhead Clinic, Richfield High School and St. Louis Park Central Clinic. These centers offer high-quality, youth-friendly medical and mental health services ranging from sports physicals, immunizations and chronic care visits to emotional and behavioral health support. Care is available to all students, regardless of a family’s ability to pay.

When children are supported in their well-being, they are more likely to stay in school and graduate, parents and caregivers are less stressed and fewer routine health concerns turn into emergency room visits.

Thanks to Park Nicollet Foundation for supporting these vital centers!
