“How are you doing?”

“I’m doing okay…”

It’s the automatic response most of us have learned to give, and it’s time to unlearn it.

The reality is, ***dePrevention doesn’t start during a crisis—it begins much earlier, in our everyday conversations.

You might not realize it, but opening up about how you’re truly feeling (and genuinely asking others how they’re doing) is the first step in su***de prevention.

Small acts like checking in with friends, talking honestly about mental health, and breaking down stigma help build a better safety net for everyone.
So, how are you REALLY doing today?

Mental health isn't just in your head—it’s in your body, too.

"Somatization" occurs when psychological stress shows up as physical symptoms such as:
• Ongoing fatigue,
• Headaches, or
• Stomach problems.

For some people, these physical signs may actually be the first indication of underlying mental health challenges.

So if you want to look after your mental health, listen to your body ... it's essential to caring for your mind.

When we talk openly and honestly about mental health, we:

• Help build safer communities around us,
• Make it easier for others to speak up and ask for help,
• Reclaim our power by sharing our struggles out loud.

Break the silence and fight stigma by speaking up, because mental health matters …and so does your story.

(P.S. Share your story with us and it might be featured in our next monthly newsletter! https://mentalhealthmn.org/get-involved/share-your-story/)

“Positive mental health encompasses more than just the absence of mental illness. It includes aspects of functioning effectively, feeling good, and connecting with others. High levels of mental well-being are associated with better recovery from stressful events, lower risks of chronic disease, and widespread benefits for society.”

We all have mental health, and taking care of our mental health doesn’t end at treatment. While treatment is an important part of recovery, long-term and regular maintenance is also key element of mental wellbeing!

Our team at Mental Health Minnesota was honored to be a part of a recent North Star Stories special episode focused on youth mental health and su***de prevention. 🧠💙

Our 988 Lifeline Center Manager, Jamal Thompson, joined the broadcast to clear up one of the biggest misconceptions about 988: You don’t have to wait for a crisis to reach out.

We are so grateful to Jamal and all of our dedicated 988 counselors who show up every day for Minnesotans when they need it most!

👉 Call or text 988 anytime for free, 24/7 confidential support.
