In honor of this day, I want to highlight some hopeful research (I hope it is useful for parents & clinicians who work with youth/families):
📍92% of offspring of parents with a psychotic disorder (e.g., schizophrenia) will not develop psychosis themselves
📍 Read that again….92% will NOT develop the illness. That’s good news.
And, the science of prevention has taught us strategies for how kids can manage their risk and build resilience (Part 4 of our book for teens, “I’m not alone: A teen’s guide to living with a parent who has a mental illness or history of trauma,” is all about resilience and prevention: https://www.seedsofhopebooks.com/)
Children fear that which they don't understand. It's important to have factual, ongoing, empowering conversations with these youth!
If you’re interested in the science, the data are from a meta-analysis (Uher et al., 2023) which synthesized data from international research totaling over 3 million offspring of parents with mental illness (can read it here: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/wps.21147)
