Being well doesn't mean things are never hard. It means we are able to stay present with the hard.

A reflection on grief with Laura Waxman, MA. Laura is a wonderful therapist working with Wild Tree Wellness out of our White Bear Lake office. Laura works with grief, self-compassion, and working with the inner critic. Here, she reflects on grief and misconceptions about a linear path to healing.

“I think the biggest point I would make is a kind of obvious one: That there is no “wrong” way to grieve. That whatever way you are grieving is the right way. People often like to fall back on the five stages of grief (Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance) as some sort of “to do list” or roadmap or linear path they’re supposed to take. But in reality, the person who developed that five-stage model in the 1960s, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, did not intend it to be for those in bereavement. Kübler-Ross came to that model based specifically on people facing a terminal diagnosis and their own death. So while thinking of those stages might be helpful for people experiencing loss, grief is not a one-size-fits-all process.”

Grieving is not a step by step process. It's messy, confusing, winding, and raw. There are no perfect words to make it better. However, sometimes, having someone to traverse the journey along side you, helping to carry the load, lessens the intensity over time.

"Not only can grief be present when we lose someone that we love, it can also show up in many different circumstances such as changing friendships, breakups, shifting life roles or jobs, or an ambiguous loss. Grief might surprise us sometimes by arising in anticipation of a significant loss, and it also might surprise us by surfacing when we weren’t expecting it. Regardless of the source, grief can cause deep emotional pain and physical pain. It may manifest as sadness, depression, anger, numbness, guilt, or hopelessness. Additionally, we can experience it in our bodies such as through feelings of discomfort, heaviness in the limbs, aches, fatigue, changes in the immune system functioning, or sleep problems, to name a few examples." - Maria Heaney, MA
