Roots Wellness Center

Roots Wellness Center We build systemic advocacy into each service from an advocacy lens. We intentionally and consciously serve our communities with marginalized identities.

Roots Wellness Center offers grassroots culturally-rooted, somatic and holistic mental health services: ARMHS, CTSS, Case Management, Kid's Day Treatment for ages 6-9, Pretrial Navigation Case Management and Holistic Outpatient Substance Use Treatment Roots Wellness Center began in 2013 as a grassroots, mental health, substance use and parenting organization focused on reducing community dispariti

es within the field. We saw a need for in-home services to address the needs of individuals who have a difficult time making it to an office due to medical issues, mental health conditions, financial issues and/or lack of transportation. We're a harm-reduction, trauma informed, culturally focused community-based organization that heals trauma at the somatic level. We serve the underserved and work hard to bring about social justice. The goal is to build a peaceful and just community throughout Minnesota. We attempt to match families with staff from the same culture. We provide safe supports and services throughout and after the process through, child and family skills and in-home therapy (individual, family, couples counseling), treatment support, holistic parenting and trauma-informed yoga. All services are tailored to the unique cultural needs of the family.

The Federal Government is playing with our community's well-being by withholding Medicaid funds. They tried to ICE us out, now they're holding Medicaid funds ransom, harming our most vulnerable community members.

As we celebrate Pride this month, we must acknowledge how traditional models of mental health and substance use treatment have not been designed with LGBTQ+ people in mind. At Roots Wellness Center, we are committed to taking a different approach. At the forefront of our treatment is the understanding that systemic factors such as homophobia and transphobia shape mental health and wellbeing. We view individuals and families within their environmental contexts and through the lens of historical trauma and current oppressions. This is why programs operate through a social justice lens. We understand that chronic social injustice and discrimination fuel cycles of addiction, trauma, and pain. Addressing these experiences is an essential part of achieving lifelong recovery and wellbeing.

Cancer is treatable, but only when care is accessible. Our most vulnerable are suffering the consequences of Medicaid cuts & restricted access. Who's next?

05/31/2026

Providers are being terminated from DHS enrollment over the weekend.

I urgently checked on Saturday and there was no termination letter.

But this morning, it was there.

Shut off again.

I've been told the PMAPs stop paying too.

Now what? Appeal? Trust DHS will fix the problem on time? Use reserves to cover payroll for how long?

They deserve a grade F. Do they want compassion for working overtime to terminate everyone?!

This has been a grueling process and even though I made mistakes on these revalidation forms, we've passed every audit.

Our last Optum ARMHS audit passed at 96%. I sent DHS the results on Friday.

Remember when I shared about our ARMHS participants who had gone months without medications, elderly waiver meals, and doctor's appointments because nobody was processing MA applications or returning calls? I called Commissioner Garrison McMurtrey, who helped push things along. But by now, that same client was just told he has stage 4 cancer.

Now, we are turned off for all mental health services.

Who can work for free? Even though we are in the "business of caring," as Senator Bobby Joe Champion said, it doesn't mean we should be unpaid or underpaid. In fact, in a world where compassion is such a rare commodity and seems to be impossible for the majority, we deserve compensation. Now, many of us just had our billing terminated. Now what?

DHS struggled to handle this, what will Nov be like when they have to ensure Medicad recipients must work 80 hours per month for their health insurance? How will they keep up with this to avoid delays that could lead to fatal outcomes among our most vulnerable? Or, the BHF 60 day limits, how will they track that to avoid significant losses? County cost reimbursement contracts do not generate enough revenue to create a business buffer. They keep us living paycheck to paycheck.

Community, thanks for your support and if anyone knows of funding support, this is the time. We have fiscal sponsorship through Indigenous Roots Cultural Arts Center. We will continue to sound the alarm as we have been until the right people who have the power to do something, will hear it in time.
