On Oct. 1, Mayo Clinic Health System leaders, staff and guests gathered for a legacy ceremony to recognize the history of the St. Francis Building in La Crosse and the generations of people who have cared for patients and families there.

The St. Francis Building opened Dec. 31, 1883, when the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration established western Wisconsin’s first hospital. In the decades that followed, generations of nurses, physicians, staff, volunteers and Franciscan Sisters contributed to its legacy of service to the La Crosse community.

In August 2024, hospital care moved from the St. Francis Building to Mayo Clinic Health System’s new 96-bed hospital in La Crosse. The St. Francis Building is now being prepared for decommissioning.

During the ceremony, attendees explored historical displays and memorabilia and shared memories of their experiences in the building.

As we recognize this important part of our history, we carry its legacy forward as we continue to serve the changing healthcare needs of our patients and community.

In the U.S., approximately 1 in 50 people may have an unruptured brain aneurysm. Understanding the condition, its risk factors and when treatment may be needed can be lifesaving.

A brain aneurysm is a bulge or ballooning in a blood vessel in the brain. Aneurysms generally fall into two categories: ruptured aneurysms, which are neurosurgical emergencies requiring immediate care, and unruptured aneurysms, which allow time to evaluate treatment and monitoring options.

For unruptured aneurysms, specialists can carefully evaluate the condition and determine the most appropriate treatment or monitoring approach. When an aneurysm ruptures, however, treatment is typically needed as quickly as possible because of the risk of re-rupture.

Symptoms of a ruptured brain aneurysm can include a sudden, severe headache — often described as the worst headache of a person’s life — as well as nausea, vomiting, confusion and loss of consciousness.

Brain aneurysms are more common in women and can run in families. Smoking and high blood pressure are also two of the biggest risk factors associated with developing a brain aneurysm.

“When my future father-in-law was admitted while on comfort care, Becca was the first nurse we met during his time on Wishart 2. She addressed his open wounds and covered the ones that were leaking and made sure he was comfortable both with positioning him and giving him medication.

Becca went above and beyond to make sure that us four kids were taken care of. She was willing to sit with my future father-in-law in the room so we could all go eat something. She encouraged us to take breaks and get some sleep.

We never had to go looking for Becca when we needed something, like repositioning him, giving him meds or answering any questions we may have. I remember after we got him all settled into the room, I went to the nurse’s station to talk to Becca about what to expect and asked her to be real and she was honest with me and that she had no idea how long we would be.

We were lucky enough to have Becca be onsite when my future father-in-law eventually passed. She made sure we had things to eat and drink. She filled us in on everything from what to expect and next steps. Every time she came into the room, she had tears in her eyes and you could tell she truly cared. She made sure not only was our dad comfortable, but we were comfortable too.

As a current Mayo Clinic employee and a lifetime member of receiving care at Mayo Clinic, I have never seen anyone exceed the expectations of patient and family care the way Becca did."

As school sports get into full swing, parents of student-athletes need to know what a concussion can look like and what to do if they suspect one.

Concussions don’t always involve a direct hit to the head, and symptoms may not appear immediately. An athlete may seem fine at first or minimize how they’re feeling because they don’t want to leave the game. That’s why changes in how they look, move and behave can be just as important as what they say.

Kimberly Penkert of Sports Medicine at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato and New Prague, Minnesota, explains the signs parents should watch for, what to do if they suspect a concussion and why returning to school should come before returning to sports.

Today, Mayo Clinic Health System staff and community members celebrated the groundbreaking of a new six-story, 180,000-square-foot building on the Luther Hospital campus. The new building will significantly expand access across the integrated medical practice, specifically surgeries, procedures and inpatient care, and will help meet the growing needs of Eau Claire and surrounding communities. The building floors will be designed for flexibility to accommodate a wide spectrum of patient care settings.

The project is part of broader development plans underway on the Luther Hospital campus, including expansions of the intensive care unit and Menard Center for Emergency Care, additional parking and improved campus access.

As we look to the future, we also honor the legacy of the Amalia Building and the generations of healthcare professionals who have cared for patients within its walls.

Construction is expected to begin in spring 2027, with completion planned for late summer 2029.
