Hi everyone, my name is Kelly, and I’m a complainer. 😅
I’ve always known this about myself, but I thought I had gotten a handle on it. After all, I’m a therapist. I don’t complain, I “vent.” 😂
Then my husband pointed out that some of my negative comments had become circular. I wasn’t really looking for a solution or even trying to process anything. I was just repeating the frustration.
That made me think about how often I see the same thing in therapy, especially with Christian clients who are afraid that talking about what’s hard will make them a “grumbler” or “complainer.” So sometimes they say nothing at all.
But complaining, venting, and lamenting are different.
And sometimes repeated complaining is actually trying to tell us something.
For me, it was burnout. Between parenting, work, Army life, and everything else, I realized I needed more space for myself.
So now, when I hear myself complaining, I try to ask:
What is this frustration pointing to?
Sometimes the complaint is the problem. Sometimes it’s the clue.
