Today we honor Juneteenth, a day of freedom, resilience, community, and continued advocacy.

As an IBCLC, Juneteenth is so important to me because Black maternal and postpartum health still deserves deeper attention, protection, and support.

Black mothers are statistically:
▪️ More likely to experience pregnancy and postpartum complications
▪️ Less likely to receive equitable postpartum care
▪️ More likely to have their pain and concerns dismissed
▪️ Less likely to receive access to quality lactation support
▪️ Less likely to breastfeed

And yet, despite generations of barriers, Black women have continued to nourish, advocate for, and care for their families and communities with extraordinary strength.

Breastfeeding support is maternal healthcare.
Postpartum support is maternal healthcare.
Being heard, respected, educated, and cared for matters.

Today we celebrate freedom, while also acknowledging the ongoing work needed to create safer, more equitable outcomes for Black mothers and babies.

To every Black mother navigating pregnancy, feeding, postpartum, and parenthood: you deserve support, evidence-based care, community, and providers who truly listen.

Happy Juneteenth. ❤️💛💚🖤

I’m Back From Vacation Soon!!

First, I want to say thank you for your patience while I was away these last 10 days. I know many families reached out needing support, and I’m sorry if I wasn’t able to respond right away.

But truthfully? In this field, it’s really important that I occasionally disappear and recharge.

I absolutely love what I do. Supporting families during some of the most raw, vulnerable, exhausting, and emotional moments of postpartum is an honor I never take lightly.

Most people don’t schedule with me because things are going perfectly.

Usually there are tears.
Pain.
Exhaustion.
Overwhelm.
Feelings of inadequacy.
Fear that something is wrong.
Fear that you’re failing.

And my role in those moments is to hold space for you. To support you. To encourage you. To help carry the emotional load when your cup feels empty.

But sometimes, in pouring into others all day long… my cup empties too.

The best way I know how to refill it is to disconnect a little. To spend time with my family and friends. To road trip. To explore. To sit in nature. To laugh. To breathe slower. To remember I’m human too.

And after 10 beautiful days away, I’m back feeling refreshed, grounded, and so excited to support this community again.

A raw and transparent conversation from your local IBCLC.

One year ago, when I moved back to the United States and run a clinic here, I had one major goal: Reduce barriers to care.

I wanted families to be able to access feeding support regardless of their financial situation. Taking insurance wasn't just a business decision, it was MY mission.

My top priorities were Medicaid and TRICARE.

Then reality hit.

In Missouri, Medicaid eliminated lactation coverage. Let that sink in.

A new mother on Medicaid who is struggling with painful breastfeeding, low milk supply, poor infant weight gain, pumping challenges, or bottle refusal has very few options. Often, support is limited to providers who may have some lactation knowledge but have not received the extensive training required to become an IBCLC.

Then came TRICARE.

As both a military spouse and a TRICARE beneficiary myself, I went to bat for military families. I met with TRICARE representatives, spoke with local leadership, advocated to hospital commanders, and repeatedly explained the need for local lactation care in our community.

For months, I was told there was nothing they could do. That it was out of their hands. That virtual support was available.

After nearly 10 months of fighting, I finally became an in-network TRICARE provider.

A huge victory, right?

Except I still haven't been granted access to submit claims.

Which means families still can't fully utilize their benefits through my clinic.

And it doesn't stop there.

This week, lactation consultants across the country are advocating against policies that would prevent babies from being present during lactation visits with certain insurance plans.

Read that again.

Insurance companies are creating policies that make it harder for a baby to attend a breastfeeding appointment.

Sometimes I don't think families realize how much of a lactation consultant's job happens behind the scenes.

We aren't just helping babies latch.

We're fighting insurance companies.
We're navigating credentialing systems.
We're advocating for coverage.
We're attending meetings.
We're writing letters.
We're explaining, over and over again, why mothers and babies deserve care after birth.

The postpartum period remains one of the most under supported times in healthcare.

And unfortunately, many insurance companies continue to treat feeding support as optional instead of essential.

I will continue fighting.

For Military families.
For Rural families.
For Medicaid families.
For the Mother sitting at home at 2 a.m. wondering why no one is helping her.

Because every family deserves access to evidence based feeding support.

Not just the families who can afford to pay out of pocket.

Community and Women Owned Businesses are a beautiful thing.

A huge shoutout to our community partner, KT with plantsandpages.shop who recently reached out wanting to help support families at Abeille Feeding Clinic – The Fort.

Thanks to her generosity, we're beginning a lending library at the clinic!

This means families will have access to books they can borrow, learn from, and use to support themselves throughout pregnancy, postpartum, feeding journeys, and parenthood.

Books, education, community, and support… four things KT and I both deeply value.

Thank you, friend, for helping make resources more accessible to the families we serve. I can't wait to watch this little library grow!

One thing I wish more families knew: not all providers go out of their way to become knowledgeable about oral ties. Not even all lactation consultants do.

The reality is that specialized training in oral ties, oral dysfunction, infant feeding, and body tension requires additional education, mentorship, experience, and a significant investment of time and money. We pursue it because families need it.

The majority of families who come to me are not coming because feeding is going beautifully. They come because they're exhausted. Because they're worried. Because they've been told, "Baby is gaining weight, so everything is fine." Or, "They can't have a tongue tie because they can stick their tongue out."

Meanwhile, breastfeeding hurts. Bottles take forever. Baby is gassy, frustrated, leaking milk, clicking, struggling to transfer milk, or parents simply know something isn't right.

Here's what I want you to know:

- A tongue tie evaluation is never just about the tongue.
- A tongue tie release is never my first recommendation.
-Feeding challenges are rarely caused by one thing alone.

We look at the whole baby.

How they move.
How they latch.
How they breathe.
How they feed.
How their body functions.
What happened during birth.
Whether tension, positioning, oral skills, or other factors are contributing.

That's why collaboration matters. That's why I work closely with bodyworkers, pediatric providers, dentists, speech therapists, and other professionals. The best outcomes happen when we look at the entire picture, not just one piece of it.

If feeding isn't going well, I promise to listen. I promise to take your concerns seriously. I promise to look beyond "they're gaining weight" and help you understand what's happening.

I can't promise every answer. I can't promise every outcome.

But I can promise that you will be heard, supported, and never dismissed here.

A Quick Scheduling Update

As of today, I only have two appointment openings remaining on Monday for feeding and lactation support before I will be out of the office until June 21st.

Additionally, there will be no Free Infant Feeding Support Groups on June 10th or June 17th

If you've been contemplating scheduling an appointment for:
- Breastfeeding concerns
- Latch difficulties
- Low milk supply concerns
- Pumping support
- Bottle feeding challenges
- Weight gain concerns

I highly recommend reaching out sooner rather than later.

As always, my goal is to make sure you feel supported and don't have to navigate feeding challenges alone.

Message me or book below if you'd like one of the remaining spots!

Good Morning Everyone!

I have a lactation counselor mentee who needs to complete two mock intake interviews as part of her training.

I'm looking for individuals who are currently:
🍼 Breastfeeding
🧴 Pumping
🌱 Weaning

If you're willing to donate 10–15 minutes of your time, please let me know!

This would be a tremendous help in supporting the education of a future lactation counselor and ultimately the families she will serve in the future.

If you're interested, please comment below or send me a message. Thank you for helping grow the next generation of breastfeeding support!

Update: thank you so much for everyone willing to help. I’ve passed on some
Information to the mentee.
