The US has hit record numbers of measles cases so far this year, and as we’re only a bit over halfway through the year, it’s helpful to know more about measles and why this is a big deal. 😷🦠

The recent measles outbreaks have many parents concerned. Most of the people who have gotten sick were not vaccinated against measles. This is a stark reminder of the importance of making sure your children are fully vaccinated. Learn more here.

As we’re getting into warmer weather ☀️ and days spent by the pool, Healthy Children has some great tips for keeping little ones safe in the water. ☺️

The AAP recommends swim lessons as a layer of protection against drowning. Many kids will be ready to start lessons at age one. Here are a few things to keep in mind while choosing a program:

1. Are the instructors trained and certified through a nationally recognized learn-to-swim curriculum? Are there lifeguards on duty who have current CPR and First Aid certifications?

2. Do they teach good safety habits in, on and near water?

3. Do they teach your child what to do if they end up in the water unexpectedly?

4. Do they offer adapted aquatics for children with special health needs and developmental disabilities?

AAP’s revised policy statement, “The Crucial Role of Recess in School”, explains why children’s recess is a necessary part of how students learn, grow, and stay healthy at every age. It is also directly related to academic success.

The AAP recommends that recess should be protected as personal time, never withheld for academic or punitive reasons. Recess includes a wide range of activities and settings, from physical play to social interaction, indoors or outdoors, and across varying time lengths.

Tick season is here! ☀️🌿🕷️

A few simple steps can help protect your family:

✔️ Use insect repellent (look for DEET or picaridin) when spending time outdoors
✔️ Wear long sleeves and tuck pants into socks in wooded or grassy areas
✔️ Do daily tick checks—especially behind ears, along the hairline, under arms, and behind knees
✔️ Shower after being outside to help wash off any unattached ticks

If you find a tick:
• Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp it as close to the skin as possible
• Pull upward with steady, even pressure (don’t twist or jerk)
• Clean the area well with soap and water or alcohol
• Avoid “home remedies” like petroleum jelly or heat—they don’t work and can make things worse

Keep an eye on the bite for redness, rash, fever, or flu-like symptoms, and call us if you have concerns.

Stay safe and enjoy the outdoors!!

Over-the-counter doesn’t always mean risk-free—especially for kids. This quick read helps break down what’s safe, what to avoid, and when to check in with your pediatrician. 💙

"Over-the-counter" (OTC) means you can buy the medicine without a doctor's prescription. Talk with your child's doctor or pharmacist before giving your child any medicine, especially the first time.

A federal judge in Boston has temporarily blocked key parts of HHS’s childhood vaccine policy after ruling in a case brought by the AAP and other medical organizations.

A stay granted by Judge Brian Murphy halts the implementation of HHS’s reduced childhood immunization schedule released earlier this year and halts the 13 recently appointed members of the ACIP vaccine advisory panel from serving ahead of their planned meeting later this week. The court also invalidated prior votes taken by the panel to change vaccine recommendations.
