The incredible power of being really heard is equaled only by the power of truly listening. In the work we do at the Georgia Mental Health Consumer Network, we see lives transformed everyday by those sharing their truth, and those hearing it.

World Mental Health Day 2020 is a great opportunity for each of us to reach out to someone in our lives to ask how they are doing, and to listen. In these incredibly challenging times, it is difficult to know how the people we care about are doing—unless we ask.

The Certified Peer Specialists who answer calls at our Peer2Peer Warm Line have received special training to provide support to Georgians who want someone to hear them, and we are available 24/7/365. We alone cannot reach out to every Georgian who is experiencing loneliness or anxiety right now. But together, as neighbors, as friends, as family, as Georgians, we can make a difference today.

If you want to experience what it is like to have someone really listen to you, give us a call at 888-945-1414. We would love to hear from you.

These are sad times for our kids. All across the state, they are harming themselves in numbers unseen before, and it’s getting worse every day.

According to Dr. Erica Fener Sitkoff, a clinical psychologist who for the past three years has been heading Voices for Georgia’s Children, 58,583 kids in sixth to 12th grades considered su***de in 2017. That figure jumped to 78,969 in 2018 then dipped slightly to 77,878 in 2019. During that same time period, 39,226 kids attempted su***de last year, compared to 37,508 in 2018 and 25,758 in 2017.

Mental health is a human right – it’s time that mental health is available for all. Quality, accessible primary health care is the foundation for universal health coverage and is urgently required as the world grapples with the current health emergency.

We therefore need to make mental health a reality for all – for everyone, everywhere.

***de may not be an easy topic to bring up, but it is necessary. If you need help talking to someone, call the National Su***de Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255) for some pointers. Practice in front of a mirror. Do what ever it takes to a life.

The toll is falling heaviest on young adults, caregivers, essential workers and minorities.

If you are in management and recovery phase of mental illness—we sometimes say “if your are ‘warding off’ depression or anxiety” — if you manage residual effects of trauma or bipolar disorder.. this is for you. Now more than ever it is difficult to keep symptoms at bay.. and we shouldn’t ignore the warning signs. We need community. We need support. GMHCN is now offering online support! Follow the link below to see how to get connected.

Each weekday, people from across Georgia come together for The New Normal, a peer-led mutual support group where participants are able to receive support online for whatever is going on in their lives. People with mental health and/or substance use concerns share what’s challenging them, what’s inspiring them, and what they are doing to stay well. A rotating team of Certified Peer Specialists from GMHCN’s Peer Support, Wellness, and Respite Centers facilitate the meetings, so there is something new every day.

We hope you will join us, Monday through Friday at 10am. The Zoom login information and a full schedule of the many online recovery and wellness opportunities offered by Georgia’s Peer Support, Wellness, and Respite Centers is available here: https://www.gmhcn.org/online-wellness-resources

Georgia’s Peer Support, Wellness, and Respite Centers are a project of the Georgia Mental Health Consumer Network funded through a contract with the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities.
