🔍 Wednesday Myth Busters

MYTH: "Medicare covers all my parent's healthcare costs."

FACT: Medicare covers a lot, but not everything. Many caregivers are surprised to learn that Medicare doesn't cover long-term care, dental, vision, hearing aids, or many prescription drugs. Understanding what Medicare does and doesn't cover is the first step to planning ahead.

Not sure what your parent's coverage includes? We're here to help you navigate it. Episode 203 of our Healthcare Redefined Podcast addresses many of these questions

Home is where the heart is—but is it set up for safety? 🏡

Aging in place is beautiful. It's independence, comfort, and staying in the space you love. But it only works when the environment supports it.

Here's my question for you: What's the *one thing* in your parent's home that keeps you up at night? Is it fall risk? Medication management? Accessibility? Or something else?

Drop your biggest aging-in-place concern in the comments—let's talk about it. 💙

🚨 Crisis Moment: When Medication Management Goes Wrong

A family came to us after their mom had been hospitalized twice in one month. Why? Nobody was tracking her medications properly.

She was on 12 different prescriptions from 4 different doctors—and nobody had connected the dots. She was taking duplicate blood pressure meds. Her pain medication was interfering with her heart medication. She was confused about when to take everything.

Here's what we discovered and fixed:
âś“ Eliminated 3 duplicate medications
âś“ Adjusted timing to prevent dangerous interactions
âś“ Created a simple, color-coded system she could follow
âś“ Set up automatic refills
âś“ Coordinated with all her doctors

Within two weeks, her confusion cleared. Her blood pressure stabilized. No more emergency room visits.

"I wish we'd called you sooner," her daughter said. "This could have been prevented."

Medication management isn't just about taking pills—it's about safety, clarity, and peace of mind. If you're juggling multiple prescriptions or watching a loved one struggle, we can help.

🚨 Crisis Moment: The Assisted Living Nightmare

A family placed their mother in what seemed like a reputable assisted living community. For 6 months, everything seemed fine. Then Mom started declining rapidly—losing weight, becoming withdrawn, and developing a urinary tract infection that went untreated for weeks.

When the daughter visited unexpectedly, she found her mother in a soiled room, no medication management system in place, and staff who couldn't tell her when Mom had last eaten.

The facility had no nurse oversight, no care plan reviews, and no accountability.

Here's what we discovered:
• No formal assessment of Mom's care needs
• Staff weren't trained on her specific conditions
• No family communication or care conferences
• No system to catch warning signs early
• Facility was operating below basic standards

What we did:
âś“ Immediately moved her to a better facility
âś“ Coordinated her medical care during transition
âś“ Created a detailed care plan with clear expectations
âś“ Established weekly family check-ins
âś“ Trained the new facility on her specific needs
âś“ Set up ongoing monitoring and advocacy

Within a month, her mother was thriving again. Her weight stabilized, her mood improved, and her family had peace of mind.

Not all assisted living is created equal. Your loved one deserves a safe, quality environment with real oversight.

🏠 Is your loved one truly safe at home—or are things only "working" because everyone is holding their breath and hoping nothing goes wrong?

Aging in place safely (staying at home as you get older) can be a wonderful goal. But it works best when it's supported by a realistic plan, a safer home setup, and honest check-ins as needs change.

Here's what "aging in place, safely" really means:

âś… Mobility: Are they steady on their feet? Trouble with stairs? Getting up from a chair or toilet?
âś… Memory & judgment: Forgetting steps in routine tasks? Leaving the stove on?
âś… Vision & hearing: Missing alarms, doorbells, or warning sounds?
âś… Daily living: Can they safely manage meals, bathing, laundry, shopping, and housekeeping?
âś… Medications: Taking meds correctly and understanding what each one is for?
âś… Driving: Safe behind the wheel (daytime, nighttime, highways, longer distances)?
âś… Emergency readiness: Plan for power outages, gas leaks, falls, or evacuation?

The good news? You don't have to figure this out alone. Our new blog post walks you through a simple family checklist to assess safety and create a realistic plan.
