Not all lower back pain comes from the spine.
The Sacroiliac Joint (SI Joint) is a significant source of lower back pain.
Clinical studies have shown that the SI joint accounts for 15–30% of chronic lower back pain cases, and up to 43% in patients with persistent or new pain after lumbar fusion.
The SI joint is located in the pelvis, connecting the iliac bones to the sacrum. It plays an important role in transferring energy between the upper body and the legs.
When the SI joint becomes injured or degenerates, it can cause pain in the lower back, buttocks, hips, or legs especially during activities such as lifting, walking, or even lying on one side.
Common symptoms may include:
• Lower back pain
• Pain in the pelvis or buttocks
• Hip or groin pain
• Pain, numbness, or weakness in the legs
• Difficulty sitting for long periods
• Pain when moving from sitting to standing
SI joint pain can mimic other conditions,
which is why it is often overlooked or misunderstood.
Accurate diagnosis is important.
Targeted evaluation, including diagnostic SI joint injection,
can help determine whether the SI joint is the source of pain.
