If milk supply came in a cookie...I'd be out of a job. 🍪🍼

Every time I walk down the postpartum aisle, I think about how overwhelming this must feel for new moms.

Cookies. Brownies. Drink mixes. Hydration packets. Teas. Candies. Tinctures. Gummies. Capsules.

All promising to "boost milk supply."

Here's what I want every breastfeeding Mom to know:

There is no supplement that can overcome poor milk removal. Milk production works on supply and demand.

If milk isn't being removed effectively-whether because of a shallow latch, oral dysfunction, breast refusal, ineffective pumping, incorrect fl**ge sizing, infrequent feeding, hormonal concerns, retained placenta, insufficient glandular tissue, thyroid issues, PCOS, or countless other reasons-no cookie or drink is going to fix the underlying problem.

Does that mean these products are "bad?" Not necessarily.

Some parents find certain products helpful.
Sometimes it's because they're finally eating enough calories.
Sometimes they're staying better hydrated.
Sometimes they're simply taking better care of themselves.

And some herbal ingredients may help certain people.

But the research overall is mixed, and there is no one product that consistently increases milk supply for everyone.

Before spending hundreds of dollars chasing the next "miracle" supplement, ask yourself:

🤍 Is my baby transferring milk well?
🤍 Am I removing milk often enough?
🤍 Is my pump working well for me?
🤍 Could there be tension or oral function challenges?
🤍 Is there a medical reason my supply might be low?

Because when we identify why supply is struggling, that's when we can make a plan that actually works.

Sometimes the answer is bodywork. Sometimes it's improving the latch. Sometimes it's adjusting your pumping routine. Sometimes it's medical support. But it's rarely as simple as buying another box off the shelf.

🤣

Just a little birth humor.

Before anyone comes for us, no, not every midwife recommends castor oil, and it's certainly not appropriate in every situation. If you've been around birth long enough though... you probably got the joke. 🤭

These two tiny feet have kept me distracted away from work for the last few weeks. I apologize for my absence but I’ve been soaking in the newness of a brand new life. I’ll be back soon.

Attention all WIC clients!!

A doula's only agenda should be empowering her client.

Your roll is not to pressure, coerce, fear monger, or suggest a client should birth in any specific way.

Your role is to provide evidence-based information, encourage clients to be active participants in the decision making process, and then support them as they make the empowered decisions that are right for them.

Two people can have the same evidence-based information and decide its application is different in their personal decisions.

A client should never feel pressured to birth a certain way, whether by a doula or a provider. A client should be encouraged to make informed choices that are right for them.
