A meniscus tear is a common knee injury where cartilage inside the joint gets ripped or damaged.

Daniel Elkin, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon at Salem Health Orthopedics specializing in the knee and shoulder. Dr. Elkin said a common question he gets from patients facing this injury is, “How long will it take to heal?”

The orthopedic surgeon said it depends on the type and location of the tear.

Who said learning about safety has to be boring? 🍉

The Community Health Education Center (CHEC) brings safety education to life for kids and families across the Mid-Willamette Valley!

The CHEC team recently joined the Community Builder Safety Fair at Dallas Community School to teach kids about water and bike safety. Through hands-on demonstrations, like the popular “melon drop,” kids learned how to prevent injuries in a fun and memorable way.

The team also joined the Keizer Fire Open House & Safety Fair to connect with parents about the Be SMART program and the importance of secure fi***rm storage. Two lucky winners went home with secure storage safes to help put those safety tips into practice.

Teaching kids how to stay safe and giving parents tools to protect their families can help prevent injuries before they happen. That’s why the CHEC team is proud to meet families where they are, share helpful resources and build healthier communities together.

Salem Health is sounding the alarm: More and more patients are landing in the emergency room after crashing electric bikes and scooters.

Sarah Daniels, RN, Salem Hospital trauma program manager, says the seriousness of these crashes is concerning.

“More than one-third of patients entered into the Salem Hospital trauma system following an e-bike or e-scooter crash have required hospital admission or transfer to a higher level of care because of the severity of their injuries,” she said. “Many involve serious trauma that requires extensive medical treatment.”

Salem Health staff and other community members attended the Marion County Commissioners meeting on Oct. 7 to support the 29th Annual Hands & Words Are Not For Hurting Week Proclamation.

This proclamation, upon approval from the Marion County Board of Commissioners, designated the week of Oct. 18 to 24 as National Hands & Words Are Not For Hurting® Week in Marion County.

Denyc Boles of Salem Health Government Relations offered a statement of support toward the proclamation while emphasizing its importance and partnership with Salem Health.

“Health care workers are five times more likely to experience violence at work than any other industry," she said. "As a health system, we (Salem Health) are committed to nonviolence for our patients, our staff and our community.”

💜 Patients, visitors, and staff members are invited to visit the Community Health Education Center on the 1st floor of building D to trace their hand and take the pledge to share their support in the reduction of violence, abuse, and su***de in our communities.

Participants have the option to display their pledged purple hands throughout the month of October.
