David Harold Hawks Jr.

David Hawks Jr. went home to be with our Lord, Friday, July 24, 2026, after a hard fought battle with cancer. He was born in Richmond, Va. to David Hawks Sr and Patsy Virginia Hawks. He lived most of his life in Cumberland County, Va. He loved fishing, hiking and swimming in the river. He loved fast cars and building them. He enjoyed hiking around Roanoke, going to all of the parks and getting in the River in Buchanan. Most recently he found a stronger relationship with Christ and sobriety. He enjoyed placing Jesus figurines around Roanoke for others to find.

He is survived by two daughters, Kacie and Makayla both from the Richmond area. He is also survived by his life partner, Sharon and dog, Zoe(Mama). He will forever be missed and loved so much.

His Celebration of Life ceremony will be held at 4pm, Sunday, August 2, 2026 at Cave Spring Baptist Church in Cave Spring, Va.

Virginia "Jenny" Anna Newton

Virginia "Jenny" Anna Newton, age 84, a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Salem, Va., and formerly, St. Brendan the Navigator Catholic Church in Shallotte, N.C., passed away with the comfort and deepest love of her family on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.

Jenny was born in Washington, D.C., on Aug 12, 1941, to the late Joseph M. and Virginia I. Donnelly, was raised in Salem, Va., and graduated from Andrew Lewis High School. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, John P. Newton; her brother, T. Patrick Donnelly; and sister, Christina Charlton.

She is survived by her brother, Joseph M. Donnelly, Jr.; her children, Matthew E. Newton (Laura), Veronica N. Bandy (James), and John J. Newton; and grandchildren, John "Jack" (Melanie), Ishbel, James, and Marilyn (Anwar).

A 45-year resident of Roanoke, and 16-year resident of Shallotte, Jenny was employed in the insurance field, concluding her professional career as a Senior Claims Consultant. Along with her husband, John, she also managed a family farm, rental properties, and other business endeavors all while serving and caring for family and friends. Although she "retired" on the Shallotte River, favored among her many jobs was an additional 12 years in support of Child Nutrition for Brunswick County N.C. Schools. She was also a volunteer Master Gardener for 10 years for the Brunswick County Cooperative Extension. She returned to Virginia in 2021, and resided at Salem Terrace. In her life, she most enjoyed gardening, crafts, cruises with John, and playing games with family and friends. Abiding love for her family was manifested by her persistent determination and sacrifice. Her greatest pride and joy were in her children and grandchildren.

A celebration of Jenny's life will be held on Thursday, August 6, 2026. Family and friends may visit from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home located at 305 Roanoke Boulevard in Salem, Va. A graveside service will then be conducted at 3 p.m. at Sherwood Memorial Park located at 1250 East Main Street, also in Salem.

William Wiley Roberts

William "Bill" Wiley Roberts, of Salem Virginia, passed away on July 24th, 2026, at the young age of 95. He was more affectionately known to his grandbabies and those closest to him as Pop. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. His love, kindness, and sense of humor touched everyone who knew him. Through his words of wisdom, his unwavering support, and a lifetime of laughs shared together, he created memories that will be treasured forever.

Pop was also deeply devoted to his love and faith in his God, Jehovah. He found some of his greatest joys in life in the time he spent speaking to others about his faith and hope in the promises of the Bible.

He is survived by his loving only daughter, Billie Jo Firebaugh (David Firebaugh); his cherished grandbabies: Barry "BG" Underwood (Lyndia Garman), James "Mitch" Hampton, Makenzie Hampton, Charles "Chase" Roberts (Jennifer Roberts), and Aja Roberts.

Throughout his life, he was blessed with the love of two devoted wives, Josie Roberts, with whom he shared 45 wonderful years of marriage, and Linda Roberts, with whom he shared the second part of his life for another beautiful 25 years. Both preceded him in death.

He was also preceded in death by his beloved only son, Thomas "Cornell" Roberts.

To his family, he was more than just "Pop". He was a source of strength, laughter, and unconditional love. He leaves behind a legacy of tenderness, hard work, and devotion that will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of all who knew him.

Whenever Pop is mentioned in conversation you can be assured a smile will crawl across the faces of whomever is reminiscing about him. His big personality was full of life, and he lived it brimming with enthusiasm and joy. He would share that energy wherever he went by reminding us all to "SMILE! Life's too short to not have a good time"

Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we find comfort in the promise of Revelation 21:4 where it states "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away." Until that time, we cling to our countless memories he gave us and the love he so freely shared. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A celebration of his life will be held on a later date to be announced.

Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever our Pop.

Mary Mildred Arnold, 83, of Salem, Va., passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2026.

Mary was born to the late John Coronato and Christine Bell on Sunday, February 14, 1943. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her siblings, Jack, Barb, Judy, and Becky.

Mary attended Hartford City High School in Hartford City, Indiana. In her adult life, Mary worked as a cook at the VA Medical Center. She earned the “redhead stereotype” in every way. Mary was fun-loving and very motivated once she had an idea. She loved to “dress to impress” and could create an outfit for any occasion. Vanilla ice cream was one of her greatest loves. Mary adored her family, and she was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Mary brought joy and warmth to everyone around her, and she will be deeply missed.

Left to cherish Mary’s memory are her children, Tim, Tena, Shon, and Shea; siblings, Sue and Peter; grandchildren, Landon, Sarah, Hannah, Makeyla, Naomi, and Jonathan; and great-grandchildren, Anniston, Sawyer, Kailys, Kaisyn, and Kendall.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., in the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem.

Beulah Mullins Overstreet, 90, of Salem, Va., went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 25, 2026.

Beulah was a kind and gentle woman whose warmth touched everyone she met. She loved square dancing and was a proud member of a local square dance club for many years. She enjoyed watching the neighborhood kids play, hiking, tending to her flower beds, maintaining a perfect yard, and keeping a spotless home. Summers were often spent at a cabin on the creek, where she enjoyed lawn games, playing volleyball, and making cherished memories with family and friends. Beulah was a hairdresser for many years and worked in the gift shop at Lewis-Gale Medical Center. Beulah was of the Baptist faith.

Above all, Beulah will be remembered for her kindness. She never met a stranger and always made others feel welcomed and valued. Her caring nature and generous heart left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

She is preceded in death by her husbands, Thomas M. Overstreet, and Bob Cunningham; her parents, Barnie and Georgia Mullins; her daughter, Mitzi Cunningham; brothers-in-law, Ronald H. Dotson, Harold Childress, Bernie Stanley, and Calvin Brooks; and siblings, Clarence Mullins, Myrtle Childress, Linda Stanley, Paul Mullins, and Claude Mullins; and sisters-in-law, Marlene Mullins and Mary Mullins.

She is survived by her stepson, Mark Overstreet; step-grandson, Thomas Samuel Overstreet; sisters, Mildred Brooks, Brenda Dotson, and Marie Johnson; special friend, Glenn Tilley; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, all of whom she loved dearly.

All services for Beulah will be held privately with her family. She will be laid to rest at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Nelson and Elsie Booth; five brothers, Leon, Danny, Tommy, Richard, and Carl Booth.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Jancee (Shawn) Hambrick; her treasured grandsons, Andrew Huffman and Nathan (Sarah) Huffman; bonus granddaughter and family Kayla (Zack), Jaxon, Nolan and Ava; her sister, Janet (Mike) Poff; and brother, Darrell (Sherry) Booth; sister-in-law, Brenda Booth; special nieces, nephews, as well as numerous family members.

She was a cherished mother, nan, sister, and friend. “We know goodbyes are not the end, they simply mean I’ll miss and love you until we meet again.”

Donald Wayne Murray

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Donald W. Murray, 85, on July 26, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Our hearts are broken but thrilled for him to be in the presence of Jesus.

Donald was a devoted husband, a proud father, and grandfather.

He was born on February 5, 1941, in Salem, Va, the son of Howard Murray and Alma Mitchell Murray. He was raised around the Bassett, Va, and Roanoke, Va, areas. He lived a life marked by honesty, fairness, and patriotism.

After high school, Donald proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He was one of the plank owners, "initial crew," for the USS Enterprise CVN65. After leaving the US Navy, Donald joined the Fairfax City, Va Police Department. After retiring, he returned to his roots in the Roanoke area and worked in security at Catawba Hospital.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Keith Murray, and sister, Linda Murray Cox.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Leah Cooke Murray; daughters, April Murray Seiders (Chuck), Tracy Murray Brookshier (Randy); granddaughters, Heather Seiders and Raleigh Brookshier; sister, Shirley Murray Campbell (Chuck); as well as many nieces and nephews.

He will be greatly missed and forever remembered.

Shelby Jean Wyatt, 60, of Hardy, Va., passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2026.

Shelby was born on Saturday, June 11, 1966, in Roanoke, Va., to the late Martha Jo Lovern and Junior Erving Lovern, I. In addition to her parents, Shelby was preceded in death by her loving husband, Henry Clay “Hank” Wyatt, Sr.; sister, Sally Jo Scott; and brother, Junior Erving Lovern, II.

Shelby lived her life with kindness and compassion. She dedicated herself to giving to others and helping anyone who needed it. Shelby loved her family immensely, especially her beloved children and grandkids. She also adored her precious we**ie dogs, who brought her much joy. Shelby will be dearly missed by everyone she touched in life, most of all by her beloved family.

Left to cherish Shelby’s memory are her daughters, Kari (Robert) Gunn and Lisa Robertson; sisters, Vickey (Keith) Hodge and Opal Haupt; and her 11 grandbabies.

A service will be held on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., in the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, with Pastor Dwight Green officiating. Friends are invited for a period of visitation from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of the service. Interment will follow the service at East Hill Cemetery, 730 E. Main Street in Salem.

Timothy William Coleman

Timothy William Coleman, 63, of Roanoke County, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 24, 2026. He was born January 4, 1963, to the late Herbert and Mazie Lee Powell Coleman.

Timothy (Tim or Timmy to close friends) was a “number one class A truck driver” of which he was most proud. He loved hauling freight, especially heavier and more challenging loads. He loved Harley Davidson motorcycles, fishing, hunting and doing anything that involved working with his hands. Tim loved being a PawPaw to his Kenny Rae and Jameson and he made sure Sundays were spent with his grandbabies. He especially loved feeding them ice cream. Tim was a simple man who enjoyed sitting on the porch and playing with his grandkids. Tim was strong, brave, stubborn, a little sharp around the edges and incredibly ornery, but he would do anything to help anyone who needed it. He touched so many lives, was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his daughters, Krystal Hawk, Stevie Strickland and Haley Johnson and husband, Ben; grandchildren, Makenly Johnson and Jameson Johnson; extended birth family including mother, Linda Diane Young; brothers, Lynwood “Wood” Jarels, Jesse Dyer and Greg Roberts; uncles, Gary Schultz, Gene Schultz and Matt Schultz; aunt, Judy Schultz, nephew, Jesse “Little Jesse” Dyer; as well as numerous special friends who were like family to Tim.

The family will welcome friends to gather for a time of visitation on Thursday, July 30, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., in the Upper Parlor of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem. Interment will be held privately.
