Mt Sherman (14,036’) was today’s adventure🤩 took the route from the Leadville side with Salida friends Kristi Kristi Olson and Suzanne.
Gorgeous fall day though rather windy (gusts 40+ mph) and chilly along the approach ridge. Less windy at the top!
Good prep for Patagonia next month 🤣

Exploring places where that look cool on a map is one of my favorite activities - and Brown’s Canyon National Monument did not disappoint!
BCNM is on the east side of the Arkansas River and rafters float through it all summer. Interesting rock formations are visible as you drive between Buena Vista and Salida (Colorado).
Not many people hike in that area though. 😁
I’d been wanting to check out “the Reef” and “Hecla Castle” and other intriguing spots noted on the maps of the area for a while. Friends invited me to go on an adventure hike (no marked trails) in the area, so of course I said yes!!!
Low water made crossing over from the west side pretty easy, and then we made our way up a gulley that flash flooded 2 weeks ago and created a football-field log jam in the river.
Wild to see the power of water on the landscape!
Getting into the canyons and rock formations made for amazing views, fun scrambles and a few navigation challenges 😝
We made an awesome loop through the southern section of BCNM, found the Reef and Hecla Castle and much more!!!
I’ll be back for sure 😍

One peak closer to my goal of reaching the summits of all the 14ers in my home county!
Today it was La Plata, and it’s a beauty ⛰️
More than 4,000 feet of elevation gain, most of it in about 2.5 miles, with some seriously STEEP stretches.
Views were totally worth it!
Also Saw some fat marmots, cute little picas, interesting plants, and just the right amount of people.
Only 5 more to go 😁
