Over 1,000 years ago, a Maya specialist drilled into the front of a living tooth and set a piece of jade in plant resin cement.

Researchers who analysed eight of these teeth in 2022, in the Journal of Archaeological Science:

Reports, found around 150 organic compounds in the sealant, including ones with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It glued the stone in and kept the mouth from turning septic.

Their recipes even varied by region. Local knowledge, handed down.
