This. 💯. Let’s be kinder to ourselves.
Most people are furious at a story. They just don’t remember they’re the one who wrote it.
Gurdjieff’s whole framework rests on a claim most people find offensive at first: that human beings live in a state closer to sleep than wakefulness, mechanical, reactive, running on programs installed so early and so quietly that they get mistaken for identity itself. The victim posture, the sense of being wronged by circumstances, people, fate, makes perfect sense from inside that sleep. What it misses is that the script producing the suffering was assembled by the same unconscious machinery now complaining about it.
This isn’t about blame. Nobody consciously chooses their wounds, their triggers, the story that says the world is against them. That story got written in childhood, in old fears, in patterns absorbed before there was ever a choosing self awake enough to object. The problem isn’t that you wrote it. The problem is staying asleep long enough that you keep performing it as if someone else did.
Waking up, in this framework, isn’t a single dramatic event. It’s the slow, repeated act of noticing you’re running a script at all, catching the reactive pattern in the moment it’s about to fire, and realizing there was always a hand on the pen the entire time. That hand was yours.
Nobody outside you assigned you this role. You can stop performing it the moment you remember you’re also the author.
