Primary and secondary inpatient health care are available to more than 287,000 veterans living in a 21-county area of the Central Piedmont Region of North Carolina. This includes the Charlotte area with ove

r 100,000 veterans, and the Winston-Salem area with 65,000 veterans. In addition to our main facility in Salisbury, we offer services in three community-based outpatient clinics/health care centers. Inpatient services include acute medicine, cardiology, surgery, psychiatry and physical medicine and rehabilitation, as well as sub-acute and extended care. Primary and specialized outpatient services are provided at the medical center complex and the outlying clinics. Services are also provided at the Veterans Outreach Centers Centers in Greensboro and Charlotte. Veterans, choosing the right place for care can help you get treated faster and ensure you receive the care you need when you need it most.

Our Kernersville VA Health Care Center nursing team recognized that some Veterans were visiting Urgent Care for conditions that were better suited for their Primary Care team—or required immediate attention in the Emergency Department. To help make these decisions easier, they developed a simple, easy-to-follow guide that explains where to go based on your health care needs.

Whether you need:
✅ Primary Care for routine appointments, medication refills, lab work, vaccinations, or chronic disease management.
✅ Urgent Care for illnesses or injuries like colds, minor cuts, sprains, or infections.
🚨 Emergency Care/Call 911 for life-threatening symptoms such as chest pain, severe bleeding, signs of stroke, or difficulty breathing.

The new brochures are now available throughout our medical center, including Primary Care clinics, Urgent Care, and the Emergency Department, and Veterans are already sharing positive feedback about how helpful they are.

If you’re ever unsure where to go, call the VA HealthConnect Clinical Contact Center at 1-855-679-0074. Registered nurses are available to help you determine the most appropriate level of care.

If you or a Veteran you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, call or text 988 and press 1 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line.

A special thank you to our Kernersville nursing team for identifying this opportunity and helping connect Veterans with the right care, at the right place, at the right time.

Naloxone Saves Lives — Available FREE to Veterans

Did you know that any Veteran can receive naloxone (Narcan®) FREE from the pharmacy without a provider prescription? Naloxone is a safe, easy-to-use medication that can reverse an opioid overdose and restore breathing during an emergency.

Veterans can request naloxone at the pharmacy during regular business hours at:
• South Charlotte VA Health Care Center
• Salisbury VA Health Care System
• Kernersville VA Health Care Center

We especially encourage Veterans at higher risk to keep naloxone on hand. If you are prescribed opioid pain medication, opioids can slow or stop breathing—even when taken exactly as directed. If you use street drugs, the risk is even greater because substances may contain fentanyl or other unexpected ingredients without your knowledge.

Who should have naloxone?
✔ Veterans prescribed opioid pain medications
✔ Veterans who use street drugs or other non-prescribed substances
✔ Family members, caregivers, and friends of someone at risk for an opioid overdose

Naloxone is safe, simple to use, and can save a life. Remember to check the expiration date and replace your naloxone every year.

Visit your nearest VA pharmacy to request your free naloxone today. Being prepared could save your life—or the life of someone you love.
