Summer is here! Which means beach days, boating, hiking, kayaking, yard work, long walks, kids' sports tournaments, and more fun in the sun.
After months of being more sedentary, your body is about to get hit with a HUGE increase in activity. Are you ready for it?
The most common summer injuries Dr. Sean sees:
ποΈ Lower back strain β Hauling beach chairs, coolers, and umbrellas across the sand
ποΈ Shoulder injuries β Kayaking, paddleboarding, or that weekend boating you haven't done since last summer
ποΈ Knee and ankle issues β Hiking trails after months of non-strenuous activity
ποΈ Tennis elbow and shoulder pain β Picking up summer sports again
ποΈ General muscle strains β Yard work, gardening, and outdoor projects
Here's how to prevent ALL of it:
β
Get a pre-summer checkup β Make sure your body is structurally ready for increased activity
β
Warm up BEFORE β Even before yard work or beach day. 5 minutes of stretching prevents hours of pain.
β
Ease back in β Don't try to match last year's performance on day one. Build gradually.
β
Listen to your body β Small aches are warning signs. Address them BEFORE they become injuries.
β
Stay hydrated β Especially in the heat. Dehydration makes injuries more likely.
Summer is too short to spend it sidelined. Get your body ready NOW so you can actually enjoy it!
