Your eyes are a primary window into your systemic health.

On World Hepatitis Day, we highlight how systemic medical conditions and liver health can visibly present in your eyes long before other symptoms appear.

Jaundice—a yellowing of the sclera (the white part of the eye)—occurs when bilirubin builds up in the body. Because the sclera contains high amounts of elastin, it has a natural affinity for bilirubin, making the eyes one of the very first places systemic shifts become noticeable.

Comprehensive eye exams evaluate far more than prescription numbers; they allow us to detect signs of systemic inflammation, vascular changes, and organ health directly through non-invasive examination.

Dr. D’s Advice: Regular dilated eye exams are a powerful tool for early detection and overall systemic wellness!

Prioritize your overall health starting with your eyes! Book your annual exam via the link in our bio!

On World Sjögren’s Day, as part of Dry Eye Awareness Month, we are highlighting Sjögren’s Syndrome - a systemic autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system targets its own moisture-producing glands.

Patients with Sjögren’s suffer from chronic, severe dry eye and dry mouth because the lacrimal (tear) glands are unable to produce adequate aqueous volume. Left unmanaged, severe ocular dryness can cause corneal inflammation, micro-scratches, and significant visual discomfort.

While Sjögren’s requires ongoing care, specialized medical therapies - such as prescription anti-inflammatory drops, autologous serum tears, and punctal plugs - can dramatically restore corneal hydration and protect your vision.

Dr. D’s Advice: You don't have to suffer through extreme dryness. Early diagnosis and targeted medical therapy are key to keeping your eyes comfortable and healthy!

Over 50% of your brain is involved in visual processing.

Today is World Brain Day, making it the perfect opportunity to recognize that your eyes are literally an outgrowth of your central nervous system during embryonic development.

When light enters your eye, retinal cells transform it into electrical impulses that travel along optic nerve fibers directly into the brain. Because visual pathways pass through multiple brain regions, changes in your vision or eye movements can often reveal subtle neurological shifts.

Conditions like ocular migraines, post-concussion visual dysfunction, and binocular vision disorders all stem from how your brain interprets visual data. Caring for your eyes is directly caring for your brain.

Dr. D’s Advice: An eye exam evaluates far more than sharp focus—it checks the health and integrity of your primary window to the brain!

It sounds like science fiction, but it is a very common medical condition we treat right here in Rowan County. For UV Safety Month, let's talk about Pterygium—often nicknamed "Surfer's Eye."

When the conjunctiva (the clear membrane protecting the white part of your eye) is repeatedly subjected to UV radiation, dry wind, and dust without a shield, it undergoes a defensive structural change. It begins forming a raised, fleshy, vascular growth.

Initially, it might start as a small yellow spot called a pinguecula. But if unprotected exposure continues, it can become a pterygium, physically creeping inward across the cornea. If left unchecked, this invasive tissue can pull on the eye surface, cause severe astigmatism, and eventually block your central line of vision entirely.

Dr. D’s Advice: Prevention is infinitely easier than surgical removal. Invest in a pair of wrap-around or high-coverage UV-blocking sunglasses to keep your ocular structures safe and smooth.

Do you wear your sunglasses on cloudy summer days too? (Hint: UV rays pass right through!) Tell us below!

Is there a hidden visual struggle behind your child's school or sports performance?

Today is World Youth Skills Day, and to support the young minds and future leaders in our Salisbury community, Dr. D wants to highlight a massive clinical truth: clear 20/20 vision is only a fraction of the visual skillset a child needs to succeed.

Many children can easily read the static bottom line of a school screening chart, yet they still struggle intensely with reading, writing, or catching a ball. Why? Because school charts don't measure functional tracking skills.

Learning requires advanced eye muscles to master saccades (rapidly skipping from word to word without losing place), accommodation (flexing focus between the board and a desk), and stable binocular fusion. If these coordinated tracking skills lag, a child faces massive visual fatigue and developmental stress.

Dr. D’s Advice: Don't rely solely on a basic nurse's screening. A comprehensive pediatric evaluation tests functional visual coordination to ensure their eyes can keep up with their growing skills!

Has your child had a comprehensive eye exam before the upcoming school year? Let us know below!

Did you know your eyes can actually get sunburned?

With the summer heat in full swing, many of our Salisbury patients remember to protect their skin, but completely overlook their ocular surface. The clinical reality? Unprotected exposure to heavy ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause a painful condition called Photokeratitis.

Think of it as a literal sunburn on the delicate epithelial cells covering your cornea. This isn't just a minor sting—it causes temporary cellular sloughing, which leads to intense foreign-body sensations, extreme light sensitivity, and tearing.

Standard tinted fashion lenses won't cut it. To truly prevent this microscopic cellular damage, your sunglasses must be clinically rated to block 100% of both UV-A and UV-B rays.

Dr. D’s Advice: Next time you head outdoors, ensure your eyewear offers maximum medical protection. Protect those corneas!

Do you have a favorite pair of sunglasses? Tell us if they're wrap-around style or classic below!

07/10/2026

Just like the skin on your arms and face, the interior tissues of your eye contain pigment-producing cells called melanocytes. When these cells cluster together, they can form a completely benign flat spot called a Choroidal Nevus—essentially an "eye freckle."

Because these spots are located on the retina or the vascular layer (choroid) at the very back of the eye, you cannot see them in the mirror, and they cause absolutely zero vision symptoms.

We find them during our routine, comprehensive clinical exams using dilated retinal checks and advanced digital retinal imaging.

While the majority of ocular nevi remain completely harmless, a tiny fraction can change over time, much like a mole on your skin. That is why we document, measure, and monitor them closely with clinical precision.

It is also another critical medical reminder of why high-quality UV protection is so important: blocking 99% to 100% of UV rays helps protect your delicate internal eye tissues from cellular changes.

Protect your internal ocular health. Schedule your annual comprehensive dilated eye exam today!
