Myth vs. Fact: Hearing Loss Only Affects Older Adults

When most people think of hearing loss, they picture an older adult. While hearing loss does become more common with age, it can affect people of all ages—including teenagers, young adults, and even children.

Factors such as noise exposure, genetics, illness, certain medications, and medical conditions can all contribute to hearing loss, regardless of age.

That's why it's important to pay attention to the signs of hearing difficulty and have your hearing checked if you notice changes. Hearing health is important at every stage of life, and early detection can make a big difference.

Clean Ears to Hear!

My wife hates dirty ears! She is a nurse and she has always been obsessed with her patients and everyone in our family having "clean ears".

Even with ears clear of wax, fluid, swab tips, or foreign objects, (and with the dedicated services of talented audiologists), we humans still have "dirty ears" and struggle to hear the truth.

Did I hear you say, "huh"?

Yes, we live in the realm of darkness, in the kingdom of the evil one, blind to the truth and unable to hear it due to being deaf.

And we refuse to acknowledge and accept the gifts of the "Chief Audiologist", Jesus Christ!

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” John 10:27

Satan and his legion of demons are on a mission to separate us from God, now and for eternity. Their strategy is to clog our ears with so much distracting "noise", such that we are unable to hear the truth of God's Gospel, the gift of eternal life through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ.

God makes it clear in the Bible that we are wise to use our ears to hear what He is saying to us. (See Matthew 11:15) And, and as is always the case, our loving Father is willing to help us.

Through God's gift of the Bible and the gift of His Holy Spirit, we are able to keep our ears healthy and clean. We are then able to hear what God is saying to us in the Bible, from the pulpit, in our prayers and conversations with Him. Healthy and clean ears allow us to hear the voice of Jesus, the "Chief Shepherd" (See 1 Peter 5:4)

Keeping God's words continually in our ears is cleansing. The power of the God's Spirit acts as a self-controlling filter, keeping out evil thoughts and the noise Satan uses to confuse, deceive and distract us from the One who loves us.

“So, then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."
Romans 10:17

Joy. Compassion. Dignity.

Over the last week, I have had the incredible opportunity of providing hearing healthcare to the amazing people in Mexico with our non-profit organization, Hearing the Call.

Hearing the Call partnered with Grupo Bimbo – the world’s most well known bakery manufacturer originating in Mexico. Grupo Bimbo’s mission at their core is to facilitate a culture where people are treated with dignity and know without a doubt that they matter. Grupo Bimbo’s slogan is: Nourishing a Better World. Not only is this accomplished through baked goods, but also nourishing the families of those they employ. Family is at the heart of Grupo Bimbo’s mission.

With Hearing the Calls partnership, Grupo Bimbo began to welcome more employees with varying hearing abilities. Since this partnership began, in only a few years, their team has welcomed many employees whose primary mode of communication has been sign language. Not only have they welcomed diversity, they have inspired and promoted the ability to learn sign language as a team. Most of the employees now utilize sign with their fellow co-workers so everyone feels included.

Every human deserves dignity, compassion, and a love that is unconditional. This has been the foundation of my heart as I have provided care this week. Without a doubt, I have experienced joy that knows no bounds. Smiles so grand that you cannot help to share in smiling too.

One of my favorite experiences from this trip has been the ability to break the communication barrier with my American Sign Language knowledge. There were many times when I would interpret English to ASL which would be interpreted by a Mexican Sign Language interpreter (who happened to know ASL). There were also many times where the patient in front of me also knew ASL, so we were able to communicate one-on-one.

During this adventure, we set out to see 60 patients. In reality, we had the ability to see 110 patients. 80 of these patients were able to obtain hearing technology to either provide sound awareness (in conjunction with their signed language) or promote spoken language communication - whichever their goal may be.

To promote a continued successful hearing journey, we provided education on hearing device care and use with the local physicians employed by Grupo Bimbo to ensure that they are taken care of.

Wow!! My heart is full of joy!
