Routines don’t mean we have to embrace the exact same practices • every day • F-O-R-E-V-E-R. Because that wouldn’t honor Ayurveda at its core (and us vatas would be forever doomed).
What matters is where we’re at, what we need, and what brings balance in that time. Doshas aren’t balanced by checking off a list of all the cool Ayurveda-y things. (Although lists are great!)
I personally find that creating rituals is much more meaningful and powerful than routines. When I can attach the why and look through my spiritual lens to make sure I’m really embodying the practices, I actually look forward to them.
As an example, I am a person who honors my sleep above almost all else (when it comes to my own list). So for me, the evening routine has a lot of meaning and is very intentional and is built on what I know works for me. And it brings me SO MUCH JOY. But I’m continually gentle with myself. Because I’m still human.
Some examples for how that looks for me are….
• A warm/hot evening drink. Sometimes it’s a warm milk with ghee and other times it’s a Dashamula tea with zero milk. Or sometimes it’s one of a hundred other options. But that evening drink tells my body “we’re settling down” and the effects are almost immediate.
• Some type of combination of abhyanga, Epson Salt bath, mustard oil bath, oil on the head & feet, and nasya oil. It doesn’t always look the same and sometimes it’s a long methodical practice with candles burning and tender music. Other nights, it’s a quick pat of oil to the head and feet and a nice whiff of serenity essential oil.
• Some evenings I pack a punch with a whole series of immunity boosting herbs and I prep my infusion for tomorrow. Other evenings, my medicine is a comforting snuggle with my man.
Because it’s ALL medicine- when it’s used with intention and we give some gratitude and we take a moment to pay attention to how it feels inside our body. This is Ayurveda. My Ayurveda.
I’ll share some more of my rituals throughout the week!
