How much protein do you really need? There’s a lot of cr@p out there right now on this topic. I hope this helps you sort through some of it.

There are no studies that say “high protein” (0.8+g protein per lb body weight) is beneficial.

The actual research and studies show again and again that for PEOPLE UNDER 65, a moderate amount of protein is what’s going to help protect you from cancer and cardiovascular disease and improve longevity in general. “Moderate protein” = 0.5 – 0.7 g of protein per lb of body weight. So for a 150-lb person that’s anywhere from 75 to about 100 grams of protein a day.

Studies show that AFTER 65 we DO need to go higher, but that’s more like 0.6 to 0.8 g protein per lb of body weight. So for a 150 lb person, that’s somewhere between 90 and 120 g of protein a day.

Studies also show that if you eat too much protein at one meal you actually accelerate that accelerate cancer and cellular aging. So if you eat more protein than your body can absorb in one meal it can actually cause harm.

Are there certain times when higher protein is beneficial? Sure!

- 🌷 Spring time (our microbiomes would have developed to digest only wild game as we would have run out of grain and preserved food from fall harvest at that time, and not much would have been growing in nature yet);
- 💪 During times of weight loss, it’s important to “up” your protein game so that you don’t lose muscle;
- 👩 In peri- and post menopause it’s really important to make sure we’re getting enough protein so that, as estrogen drops, we can still maintain muscle and bone tissues in particular.

Just personally, if I take my body weight divide it in half for a “moderate protein” amount, that’s actually a lot of protein for me, and when I do eat that much protein, I feel a lot better.

You might actually be a little lower in protein than you realized, if you’re like me. It’s helpful to count your macros for a few days or a few weeks to just see where you are and what feels good for you.

I hope this helps!! XOXO 😘

Meditation is the 5th part of my Ayurvedic morning routine. Mala beads (think: the OG of rosaries) help me to stay focused in my mantra (Sanskrit for “mind-bridge”…your mind’s point of focus to stay connected to the present moment). Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you probably have heard about the benefits of meditation…but just in case…Meditation:
Lowers cortisol (ie stress)
Reduces anxiety
Improves focus
Enhances attention span
Improves sleep quality
Decreases blood pressure
Helps with emotional regulation
Improves memory recall
Try it!
P.S. Guided meditation is best if you feel you just can’t focus. 🧘‍♀️ Check out the Calm app!

I don’t know why avocado oil is stealing the show these days…it’s NOT…THAT…GREAT (there, I said it). But you know what is? Extra Virgin Olive Oil! 🫒 one of the only oils that can boast all this and be a BFF in your peri and postmenopausal journey:
- lowered risks of heart attack and stroke by 30%
- better bone density bc of its Vitamins E and K
- such a anti-inflammatory “punch” that it lowers chronic inflammation the way ibuprofen does 🤛
- lowered blood pressure
- lowered LDL (bad cholesterol) and increased HDL (good cholesterol)
AND YOU CAN COOK WITH IT SAFELY! Its smoke point is 410*F! So sautee, roast, drizzle, sizzle, etc. to your heart’s content. ♥️
Also, there are no studies showing that use of seed oils is bad for you. In fact, the research says that those who use more seed oils in their kitchens are healthier and have many of the lowered health markers I just mentioned. The problem is when you eat food that has been fried in those oils (or any oil!)…the oils fast food joints and restaurants use to fry is reused…sometimes over and over again. And we all know that deep frying foods changes their status from healthy to harmful. Seed oils are also used in processed foods like baked goods, crackers, potato chips, etc., which are problematic for SO many other reasons. Don’t believe the fear-based hype around seed oils. Use your brain and make better FOOD and LIFESTYLE choices. Swapping out your oil when you’re still eating junk food and fried food won’t help.
Hope this does.
Xoxo 😘

Did you know meditation can actually aggravate vata? Meditation is a practice that increases prana (life force), which is actually the subtle form of vata. Anything that increases prana (like breathwork..."pranayama") can also aggravate vata, when performed in an unsupportive amount. Check out my start guide for meditation for your prakruti (original constitution) or vikruti (imbalance). Let me know what questions you have! XO

Salt and hypertension (high blood pressure)…is salt really the villain?

For a long time, the medical industry told people to cut salt out of their diets after a high blood pressure diagnosis.

In Ayurveda, salt is truly vital to help ease the symptoms of excess vata dosha: anxiety, worry, and fear as well systemic dryness—both of which can cause and contribute to high blood pressure.

While too much salt can absolutely raise blood pressure due to swelling and fluid retention, salt can also reduce anxiety through its function as a vital electrolyte to keep the nervous regulated and balanced, and salt helps out tissues hold on to moisture, which keeps out arteries (“rakta dhatu”) hydrated and supple (stiffness of the arteries causes and contributes to high blood pressure).

I’ve actually seen clients’ blood pressure come down, when they begin salting their food again.

While reducing salt can be an effective way to lower blood pressure for some, Ayurveda is a science that says not everything is right for everyone.

I would also add that our packed and processed foods (often full of sodium) are also laden with some bigger culprits, like sugar and hydrogenated oils/fats, that in my opinion are of bigger concern in their contribution to the inflammation that contributes to obesity, high cholesterol, Type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure.

If you’ve been shunning salt for decades AND you eat a diet low in processed foods AND you’ve got dryness and anxiety AND you’re not getting the results you’re looking for BP-wise, you might consider talking to your healthcare provider(s) about your salt intake.

Let me know what you think!
Xoxo 😘
