Meet our Bariatric Surgery APCs (advanced practice clinicians): Makaela Adamson, Carine Stearman and Tara Huntsman.

Our surgical APCs are an essential part of the bariatric surgery team!

From preparing patients for surgery to supporting them throughout recovery and long-term follow-up, our APCs work closely with our surgeons, dietitians, and the rest of the care team to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care.

They help patients navigate each stage of the surgical weight management journey—answering questions, monitoring progress, managing medical needs, and helping patients build a foundation for long-term health.

We’re grateful for the expertise, compassion, and dedication our surgical APCs bring to our patients and our team every day.

Weight management is a lifelong process and behavioral health interventions have shown to improve outcomes for bariatric and non-surgical weight management patients alongside medical intervention. Sometimes, the mental health components can make engaging in helpful dietary and exercise patterns more difficult or, the process of managing weight can exacerbate mental health concerns. Some individuals may benefit from brief individual intervention with our psychologists and/or participation in Dr. Farnsworth’s compassion-focused therapy group. Group participants will learn to strengthen the three flows of compassion, move away from the critical self, learn coping strategies, and receive peer support in this weight management-specific 10-week group. You are not alone in your struggles and remember that our whole team is to support you in your goals!

If you are interested in learning more about Compassionate-Focused Group Psychotherapy, please reach out to your provider for more information!

Dr. Eric Volckmann, Director of Bariatric Surgery and Co-Director of the Comprehensive Weight Management Program, was recently featured as a guest on The Scope Podcast, where he discusses when acid reflux (GERD) requires more than medication.

In this episode, he explains when surgery may be the right option, how minimally invasive laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery works, what recovery is really like, and how a patient's weight can influence the best treatment approach.

James Miller, RD, answers: How do GLP-1 medications affect nutrition needs?

GLP-1 medications are commonly referred to as ‘appetite-suppressants’ because their main effect is to decrease hunger and interest in eating. This appetite-suppressing effect of GLP-1 medications is so strong that individuals on a GLP-1 medication often skip meals because they’re not hungry and they run the risk of not consuming enough calories, protein, and other nutrients to meet their body’s daily energy needs.

If individuals on a GLP-1 medication continually skip meals and don’t support their body’s nutrient needs, then they run the risk of eventually experiencing nutrient deficiencies, and there becomes a higher risk of loss of lean muscle mass as they continue to lose weight. At a bare minimum, individuals taking a GLP-1 medication should focus on consuming enough protein, fiber, and water, as these nutrients significantly affect overall health.

Exercise Tip for Hot Weather from Juliane Cook, BS, ACSM-CEP, Exercise is Medicine

When exercising during the summer, here are things to consider:

- The time of day you exercise matters. With the summer heat, it is recommended to avoid exercise during the hottest part of the day, usually between 2-5 pm. Try to exercise either in the early mornings or in the evenings.
- Hydration: When you are exercising, try to get about 8 oz of water for every 15-20 minutes of activity.
- Sun protection: If you are exercising in the sun, be sure to wear sun protection either with clothing, hats, or sunscreen.

And remember, if it is too hot outside to exercise, you can always exercise indoors!

Wishing you a safe and happy Fourth of July!

Celebrations are about so much more than what's on your plate. Whether you're enjoying a backyard barbecue, watching fireworks, spending time with family, or relaxing with friends, remember that one meal—or even one day—does not define your health journey.

At the Comprehensive Weight Management Program, we believe that lasting success comes from consistency, not perfection. Savor your favorite traditions, stay hydrated, move your body in ways you enjoy, and most importantly, make memories with the people who matter most.

Have a wonderful Independence Day!
