Drowning is the second leading cause of preventable injury death for children under 14, and most tragedies happen closer to home than you might think. In Utah, 70% of drowning deaths occur between May and August, with many happening in lakes, rivers, pools, and even bathtubs.

“Most child drownings happen when an adult is present but not paying attention,” says Karlee Kump, Community Health Manager at Primary Children’s Hospital. “Attention is the best prevention.”

✅ Always actively supervise children around water
✅ Assign a distraction‑free “water watcher”
✅ Use Coast Guard‑approved life jackets in lakes and reservoirs
✅ Never leave a child alone in the bathtub, even for a second

🎉 Happy International Day of Play! 🎉

Today at Primary Children’s Hospital, we celebrated the power of play through laughter, creativity, and connection—bringing moments of joy to our patients and families. From games and crafts to music and imagination, it was a reminder that even in the hospital, kids are still kids.

Play is essential to childhood, building resilience, confidence, and a sense of normalcy.

In healthcare, it’s also a powerful tool for healing—helping reduce anxiety and pain, support emotional expression, and make medical experiences less overwhelming.

That’s why at Primary Children’s, play is part of care every day. Because when we protect play, we protect childhood. 💙

You may have seen the yellow Children's Miracle Network balloon where you shop, but did you know donations benefit Primary Children's Hospital?

This year, our patient Kendalyn was named Children's Miracle Network National Patient Champion for her positive attitude and for being an incredible example to other children in her community. She was selected alongside 19 other kids from across the country for this special honor.

If you are in Utah and see the little yellow Children’s Miracle Network balloon while shopping at Costco, your donation supports patients like Kendalyn receive life changing treatment at Primary Children’s Hospital 💛

Sarah is a talented Music Therapist at Primary Children's Hospital. Her love for music and people led her to a career where both come together every day. After seeing firsthand how music helped a friend recover after a stroke, she knew music therapy was her calling.

Sarah completed her music therapy internship at Primary Children’s Hospital in 2018, and quickly fell in love with the program, the patients, and the incredible team. Whether she’s helping a child relax, process difficult emotions, or reach important rehab goals, Sarah uses music as a powerful tool for healing.

She recently earned her Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, allowing her to bring even more depth, compassion, and expertise to the care she provides at Primary Children’s Hospital.

We’re so thankful for Sarah and the heart she brings to our patients every day. 🎶

On May 11, 1922, Primary Children’s Hospital opened its doors in a Salt Lake City home with just 35 beds, thanks to the vision of Louie B. Felt and the Primary organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Through community support, we grew to 70 beds in 1952, then 170 beds, and in 1977 partnered with the University of Utah School of Medicine, bringing education and innovation to pediatric care.

Today, Primary Children’s Hospital Salt Lake Campus is a thriving hub with 60+ specialized pediatric services, 800 pediatric providers, and 3,000+ caregivers dedicated to helping kids live their healthiest lives.

Nearly 1 in 5 children in the U.S. suffer from seasonal allergies every year. Sneezing, itchy eyes, and stuffy noses can make outdoor fun a lot less enjoyable.

So, what can you do to help your child? Dr. Glen Porter, an allergy expert, says there’s hope beyond the usual medications!

🌱 Allergy testing can pinpoint exactly what’s triggering your child’s symptoms – and from there, we can find the best way to treat it.

💉 Immunotherapy (allergy shots or drops) helps your child's body gradually build tolerance to allergens, reducing symptoms over time or even eliminating them! It’s been a game-changer for many families, with studies showing it can reduce symptoms by up to 85%!

This week is National Pediatric Transplant Week, and we’re proud to recognize the life‑saving impact of the Primary Children’s Hospital Transplant Program. As the only pediatric transplant program in the Intermountain West, Primary Children’s provides heart, liver, and kidney transplants for children who urgently need them.

In partnership with University of Utah Department of Surgery , our teams had a record year in 2025, performing 18 pediatric heart transplants and 21 pediatric liver transplants—each one made possible by the extraordinary generosity of organ donors and donor families.

Today, more than 2,000 children in the United States are waiting for a life‑saving organ transplant. This week, we celebrate donors, honor transplant families, and raise awareness about the critical need for organ donation so more children can receive the care and second chances they deserve.
