Cybersecurity isn’t just an IT issue—it’s a public safety responsibility.

In this Journal article by Cynthia Murray, a clear message emerges: protecting emergency systems is a shared effort across every role in an communications center.

As NG911 continues to evolve, so do the risks—from service disruptions to data breaches and emerging cyber threats. The takeaway? Preparation, collaboration, and awareness are critical at every level.

That includes recognizing that technology alone isn’t the answer.

Cybersecurity professional Joe Wassel said: “People expect me to talk about technical aspects of cybersecurity such as firewalls, but the key to protecting this framework is understanding that humans are still in charge. We need three ships—leadership, partnership, and friendship—because information moves at the speed of trust.”

A wild animal encounter call comes in. Does your protocol cover it?

As policing challenges evolve, so do the best practices that guide safe, consistent call handling. Updates to the Police Priority Dispatch System reflect those changes—introducing new guidance for situations agencies may not encounter often, like wild animal incidents, but still need to be prepared for.

Without those updates, agencies may be left navigating these calls without the most current protocols in place.

Hear more from our police subject matter expert, Dave Warner, on why staying current matters.

June is National Safety Month—a time to recognize the everyday actions that help keep our communities safe.

For Emergency Dispatchers, the focus on safety begins the moment a call is answered. They guide callers through their most critical moments—while equipping field responders with the information they need to act quickly and effectively.

This month, we’re grateful for the professionals behind the headset, those in the field, and the systems that support them in delivering safe, coordinated care every day.
