Jo Nagai was ten years old when he noticed something extraordinary: the swallowtail butterflies he'd raised seemed to recognize him, while wild ones scattered at his approach. That simple observation sparked a question that would lead him on a two-year scientific journey.
Determined to understand what he'd witnessed, Jo reached out to Dr. Martha Weiss at Georgetown University, whose research had already shown that moths retain memories through metamorphosis. Together, they designed an experiment. Jo trained caterpillars to associate a vibration with lavender scent, then waited to see what would happen after their brains completely rebuilt inside the chrysalis.
Seventy percent of the adult butterflies still avoided the lavender—their memories had survived the transformation. But Jo didn't stop there. When he bred these trained butterflies, something even more remarkable emerged: their offspring and grandchildren instinctively avoided lavender too, despite never experiencing the original training themselves.
At just ten years old, Jo documented his findings in a 33-page paper and presented alongside Dr. Weiss at the International Congress of Entomology in Kobe. His work challenges everything we thought we understood about genetics and inheritance, proving that sometimes the most revolutionary discoveries come from a child's willingness to ask "why" and pursue the answer with genuine curiosity.
