The Utah Environmental Public Health Tracking Network provides useful information about environmental exposures and related health effects. This information comes from a nationwide network, run by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), that displays health data and environmental data in one place. In Utah, this information is housed on IBIS-PH, or the Indicator Based Information Sys

tem for Public Health, and contains Utah-specific environmental and health data for the public to learn more about where they live, work and play.

States with the highest rates of melanoma, like Utah, often surprise people, as northern and high-altitude locations frequently outpace warmer, southern destinations. This is largely due to a combination of demographics (larger fair-skinned populations), outdoor recreation habits, and thinner atmospheric UV protection. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is emitted by the sun and some artificial sources such as tanning beds. Although UV radiation helps the body create vitamin D, overexposure can cause harm to the skin and eyes. Sunburn is a sign of short-term overexposure, while premature aging and skin cancer are side effects of prolonged UV exposure. UV exposure increases the risk for potentially blinding eye diseases if eye protection is not used. To find out more about skin cancer rates in Utah, click on the link in our bio.

Wildfires impact air quality and put people’s health at risk from smoke exposure. Smoke exposure can be sudden, last for days or weeks, and affect indoor and outdoor air quality. Smoke can travel great distances and become trapped in areas far from the source of the wildfire by weather patterns.

January is national radon action month. Radon is a radioactive gas with no color, taste, or smell. It can only be detected through proper testing. According to the CDC, any home or building can have high radon levels regardless of how old or new it is. Everyone is potentially at risk of radon exposure. Prolonged radon exposure can lead to lung cancer.
Test your home and protect your loved ones from radon.
Visit the Utah Radon program’s website at: radon.utah.gov to buy a radon test kit.

The CDC estimates that 1 in 6 Americans get sick from eating contaminated food every year. Bacteria and viruses are the most common causes of foodborne illnesses (also known as food poisoning). The symptoms and severity of food poisoning vary, depending on which bacteria or virus has contaminated the food.

Three types of bacteria that can cause food poisoning are salmonella, escherichia coli (E. coli), and listeria. Recognizing possible sources of exposure can help you know how to prevent getting sick.
