Earlier this year, we put a call out for moments of celebration—big or small—for a video project. You all blew us away, sharing more photos and videos than we could use for that project.

The moments you shared were so meaningful that we knew we needed another way to honor them. National Cancer Survivors Month felt like the perfect opportunity.

The National Cancer Institute defines a cancer survivor as a person from the time of diagnosis through the rest of life. Survivorship can look different for everyone.

In this first collection of Moments of Survivorship, you'll see people returning to the soccer field as a coach after a glioblastoma diagnosis, ringing the end-of-chemo bell, celebrating with friends, taking a first walk outside after major lung surgery, choosing the lighting color for radiation treatment, finding a yard decorated by loved ones to mark the halfway point of chemotherapy, experiencing a Christmas surprise while spending the holiday inpatient, sharing a late-night dinner arranged by a nurse, and ringing the end-of-treatment bell with an unexpected twist.

These moments may seem ordinary to some, but they carry extraordinary meaning. They reflect the many ways people continue living, connecting, celebrating, and creating memories after a cancer diagnosis.

Throughout June, we'll be sharing more of the beautiful photos and videos you entrusted to us. Thank you for allowing us to be part of these moments and for sharing your stories with our community.

June is National Cancer Survivors Month.

Many organizations, including us, use the National Cancer Institute's definition of a cancer survivor: a person is considered a survivor from the time of diagnosis through the rest of their life.

At the same time, we know the word "survivor" can mean different things to different people. Some embrace it, while others prefer different language to describe their experience.

What comes to mind when you hear "cancer survivor"? Does it reflect your experience, or would you describe it differently?

We'd love to hear your perspective in the comments. There are no right or wrong answers—every experience and viewpoint is welcome.

Bill Gephardt never imagined that a routine annual physical would end up saving his life. A simple blood test revealed he had early-stage prostate cancer, catching the disease before he ever experienced symptoms.

Through conversations with his care team and a shared decision-making process, Bill chose radiation therapy as the treatment option that was right for him. Advances in cancer research have helped make treatments like these more effective and precise, giving patients more options than ever before.

Today, Bill is grateful for the extra time he has with the people he loves. That's why he supports cancer research—not only because it made a difference in his own life, but because he wants those same opportunities to be available for future generations.

Every cancer story is different, but they all remind us why research matters. It creates new possibilities, expands treatment options, and helps more people have time for the moments that matter most.

Thank you, Bill, for sharing your story and helping others understand the impact of cancer research.

Today, we honor and remember Karen Huntsman.

Karen's kindness, honesty, persistence, and unwavering hope helped shape us from our earliest days. She understood that healing involves more than medicine alone, and she worked to create a place where patients and families could find comfort, dignity, beauty, and care.

Her legacy lives on in the people we serve, the discoveries being made, and the hope that continues to grow because of the movement she shared with Jon M. Huntsman, Sr.

We are deeply grateful for Karen's life and the countless ways she touched our institute, our community, and families facing cancer across the world.

Our hearts are with the Jon M. and Karen Huntsman family as we remember an extraordinary woman whose impact will be felt for generations.

There are moments in cancer research that stay with you.

This weekend at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting—one of the largest gatherings of cancer experts in the world—oncologists from around the world rose to their feet following the presentation of results from the RASolute 302 clinical trial.

The study found that daraxonrasib, a new targeted medication. doubled median overall survival for patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer, increasing it from 6.7 months to 13.2 months.

For patients and families facing this disease, every advance matters. Moments like this reflect years of research, clinical trials, and the individuals who choose to participate in them.

We are honored to have been one of only 60 sites worldwide to offer this trial and contribute to this important research. Learn more about this exciting development through the link below.

Thank you to Dr. Joseph McCollom for capturing this moving moment and allowing us to share it.

June is a month of reflection, awareness, and community.

Throughout June, the Beacon of Hope will shine in honor of National Cancer Survivors Month, Uterine Cancer Awareness Month, and Huntsman Cancer Foundation SportsFest. Each lighting is a tribute to the people whose lives have been touched by cancer and a reminder of the research, treatment, and compassionate care that continue to bring hope to patients and families.

As the Beacon lights the night sky, we invite you to take a moment to reflect on the patients, survivors, caregivers, loved ones, clinicians, and researchers who make this work possible every day.

We are also grateful for everyone participating in Huntsman Cancer Foundation SportsFest by running, walking, biking, volunteering, or cheering others on. Their support helps move cancer research forward, with 100% of participant-raised funds supporting research at Huntsman Cancer Institute.

June Beacon of Hope schedule:
Purple: June 5–7, National Cancer Survivors Month
Orange & Blue: June 12–14, Huntsman Cancer Foundation SportsFest
Peach: June 19–21, Uterine (Endometrial) Cancer Awareness Month

Access to comprehensive cancer care closer to home can make a meaningful difference for patients and families.

We're pleased to announce Portneuf Medical Center as our newest affiliate hospital, expanding access to advanced expertise, research, education, and multidisciplinary oncology services for communities across Southeast Idaho.

This affiliation strengthens local cancer care by supporting Portneuf providers while helping patients receive most of their care in their own communities. When specialized treatment in Salt Lake City is needed, patients will have coordinated referrals and support throughout their care.

As part of our growing network of affiliated hospitals across the Mountain West, this collaboration helps increase access to coordinated, high-quality cancer care while keeping patients connected to the care teams they know and trust.

What if genetic testing could help identify a treatment that keeps prostate cancer under control for longer?

A new clinical trial led by Neeraj Agarwal, MD, FASCO, found that a combination of two therapies may help do just that for some patients with metastatic prostate cancer and specific genetic changes.

The results suggest that starting this combination therapy earlier—before the cancer becomes resistant to treatment—could help improve outcomes for men with advanced prostate cancer.

The findings also highlight why genetic testing is so important. Identifying specific gene changes can help connect patients with treatments that are better matched to their cancer and may help keep the disease under control for longer.

May is Brain Cancer Awareness Month. This weekend, the Beacon of Hope will shine gray in honor of patients, caregivers, and loved ones affected by brain cancer. We also recognize and thank our dedicated clinical and research teams for their tireless work to improve treatments and, one day, find a cure.

Research makes it possible to work toward earlier diagnosis, better treatments, and meaningful survivorship. We are grateful to our donors, philanthropic partners, and federal funding agencies whose support makes this work possible and allows progress to continue.
