The profound complexities and difficult decisions faced by survivors of domestic violence, particularly those with companion animals, are often underestimated. Many survivors report that they stayed in a violent home or dangerous situation because they knew of no way to get their beloved pets to safety as well. Learning that there are programs to help house or otherwise support their pets can provide the impetus for individuals to escape a dangerous situation.

That’s why AWI launched the Safe Havens for Pets directory in 2011. Today, it provides a searchable database of more than 1,200 pet-friendly sheltering resources throughout the United States—because no one should have to choose between their safety and their best friend.

When someone is grieving, just being present can make all the difference. You don't have to make them feel better or change how they feel. Just listen. Let them talk about their loved ones and be in the moment with them. If someone's grief makes you feel uncomfortable, that's okay. You aren't meant to be their therapist, but if you are their friend/support try to hold space for them. And don't make the conversation about yourself and deflect from the person talking about their loss.
