At To The Point Recovery, we believe in a personalized approach to patient care. Apparently, so does Spare! 😹

Spare has taken it upon himself to provide a little extra TLC to our patients. His specialties include:

🐾 Supervising treatment sessions

🐾 Making sure patients stay on the table for just a few more minutes

His services are complimentary, his schedule is unpredictable, and he definitely doesn’t understand personal space! 😂

✈️ Travel, Posture, and Needling: Why Long Car and Plane Rides Trigger Pain

From sitting on an airplane to walking around Washington, DC! 🚶‍♀️

I’m in the DC area this week attending a continuing education course on dry needling. And after spending time on airplanes, trains, and escalators, I’ve been reminded of something I frequently tell my patients:

MOVE! Move gently and move often. Your best posture is often your NEXT posture!

Ever stepped off an airplane or out of a car feeling 20 years older? 😅

It’s not necessarily poor posture that’s causing your discomfort. Often, it’s staying in the same position for too long.

Long periods of sitting can contribute to stiffness and discomfort in your neck, shoulders, lower back, and hips.

🎯 How can dry needling help?

For some patients, dry needling can help reduce muscle pain and sensitivity. But it’s only one part of the solution!

My favorite travel tips:
✅ Change positions frequently.
✅ Walk whenever possible.
✅ Try shoulder rolls, neck movements, and ankle pumps while seated.
✅ Take a short walk after arriving at your destination.

I’m taking my own advice this week by exploring Washington, DC on foot!

Movement is medicine—and sometimes the best thing you can do is simply get up and move!

📌 MYTH BUST MONDAY: Is Dry Needling Just Acupuncture?

They may look similar—and both use thin, solid-filament needles—but dry needling and acupuncture aren’t interchangeable treatments.

As a physical therapist, I use dry needling based on what I find during a musculoskeletal examination. I target a muscle or group of muscles that appear to be contributing to pain, restricted movement, or impaired function.

And the needle isn’t the whole treatment.

Dry needling is one tool I can combine with exercise, manual therapy, and movement retraining to address why you’re hurting and help restore function.

So, same-looking needle? Yes.
Same clinical approach? No.
