Yoga for Grief Relief

Yoga for Grief Relief Grief is a radical opportunity to transform our awareness, but few of us know it. When I was twenty years old, my mother died of a stroke.

Yoga for Grief Relief is a somatic psychotherapeutic process using specific Yoga techniques as somatic tools to address the physical, mental and spiritual symptoms of grief towards self re-identification following an important loss. For two and a half years, I lived in a state of denial, completely disconnected from my feelings. When I was finally able to be with my pain, I discovered, to my ast

onishment, that my body had created an additional calcium deposit between one of my ribs and the breastbone—what the body will sometimes do in response to a fracture. In essence, what my mind had been hiding, my body showed with pristine clarity: I had a broken heart. As life continued after the loss of my mother, I began training with Lyn Prashant, an outstanding grief counselor and therapist and creator of the Degriefing process, a comprehensive mind-body approach to grief therapy. She helped me learn that grief is one of our least-tapped sources of self-knowledge. Sometime after starting to work together, Lyn asked me to develop a yoga prac- tice to address the body-centered effects of grief, which can range from feelings of lethargy to dull aches, tightness in the chest cavity, shortness of breath, and sleeplessness. I was well equipped through my training as a somatic psychothera- pist and yoga teacher. But it was my own personal experience of grief that led me to build a sadhana, or spiritual discipline, that eventually became a holistic practice I call Yoga for Grief Relief.

How much loss are we carrying that we don't call grief?

We live surrounded by change.

Wars that continue. A heating planet. People displaced from their homes. Economic uncertainty. Social changes that challenge what once felt stable.

And alongside these are the losses of our own lives—the relationships, health, dreams, identities, people, places, and possibilities that change or disappear.

Not all of this grief announces itself as grief.

But the body may still carry it.

Tomorrow at Integral Yoga Institute San Francisco, I’ll be offering Yoga Therapy for Grief Relief: Navigating Loss in Challenging Global Times—an experiential afternoon exploring how we can recognize grief, attend to its effects on body and mind, and develop ways to navigate loss while continuing to engage with life.

There is still time to join us. https://conta.cc/45t0kPa

When Grief Needs Our Attention

Grief does not always announce itself as grief. Sometimes it appears as anxiety, irritability, exhaustion, difficulty concentrating, disconnection, or simply the sense that we are not quite ourselves.

When we recognize that a loss may be underneath what we are experiencing, we can respond to it differently. This Saturday, I’ll be at Integral Yoga Institute San Francisco offering Yoga Therapy for Grief Relief: Navigating Loss in Challenging Global Times—an experiential workshop exploring practical ways to address grief through the body, mind, and spirit.

Not all grief is related to death.

A diagnosis. Divorce. Retirement. A traumatic experience. Migration. A relationship that changes. Or living a life very different from the one we expected.

Next Saturday, I’ll be at Integral Yoga Institute San Francisco offering Yoga Therapy for Grief Relief: Navigating Loss in Challenging Global Times, an experiential workshop exploring how grief affects body, mind, and spirit—and how yoga therapy can help us navigate loss while remaining engaged with life.

Today we begin the next cohort of From Enemy to Ally!

Over the coming weeks, a small group of participants will be exploring anxiety through awareness, embodied practice, psychological insight, and shared inquiry.

One of the core premises of this work is that anxiety is not simply something to eliminate, but a meaningful signal that can be understood and worked with more skillfully.

I'm grateful for everyone who has chosen to join the journey.

And as always, I'm curious:

What has anxiety been trying to tell you lately?

P.S. If you've been considering joining and are wondering whether it's too late, feel free to reach out. We'll be meeting later today, and there may still be a way to participate meaningfully. https://conta.cc/4edgJeg

Returning from an insightful and thoughtfully organized SYTAR, one reflection stayed with me:

People are not only looking to understand suffering—they are looking for ways to work with it.

How do we remain present and responsive when life becomes uncertain?

Perhaps the task is not simply to get rid of anxiety, but to learn how to listen, regulate, and respond differently.

A question I'll continue exploring in From Enemy to Ally - https://conta.cc/44eMn6y -, beginning June 24.

I'm truly excited to present this new perspective I've been working on at IYISF! Thank you for the opportunity!
