ANSWER: FALSE! ❌
Hospice eligibility is not determined by whether someone can still walk, talk, eat, leave the house, or enjoy activities.
Some patients entering hospice may still be able to walk independently, have conversations, eat meals, or participate in family activities.
Hospice eligibility is based on the patient’s overall medical condition and prognosis, including disease progression, functional decline, nutritional changes, increasing symptoms, hospitalizations, infections, and other clinical findings.
Waiting until someone is completely bedridden can sometimes mean families miss out on valuable hospice support.
💡 Bonus Trivia: Hospice care can sometimes continue for longer than six months when the patient continues to meet eligibility requirements.
