Tree of Life Counseling Center

Tree of Life Counseling Center Welcome to Tree of Life Counseling Center. We believe that deep inside you lie undiscovered strengths and gifts. It is our mission to help you uncover them.

Empowering, culturally responsive therapy for those dedicated to fostering intergenerational healing, advancing racial justice, tapping into their own inner healing potential, and contributing to the collective liberation of our communities. Our mission is to help you discover them. We are dedicated to providing culturally-responsive, social justice-oriented services that differ from conventional Western medicine, often referred to as non-traditional. Our methods emphasize the connection between the mind and body, acknowledging internalized biases and oppressive beliefs. We help you explore the origins of your challenges and guide you on a path to healing, rather than just recognizing their sources. Essentially, our goal is to tackle the root cause of our community’s pain. Our therapy space aims to be a safe sanctuary where you can freely delve into every aspect of yourself without worrying about judgment. The goal is to cultivate self-awareness, acceptance, and promote our community's collective liberation. Your healing journey not only benefits you but also inspires healing in others just by being your authentic self. We are excited to connect with you!

Cultural shame shows up in play: hiding characters, rejecting dolls that look like them, changing names, or avoiding cultural foods or languages. This is not pathology — it’s a response to assimilation pressure and racialized messaging.⁣

𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐝𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 ⁣

• Use narrative play to explore belonging, exclusion, and identity wounds.⁣
• Validate the child’s experience without forcing cultural pride.⁣
• Use cognitive restructuring to challenge internalized oppressive messages.⁣
• Invite and encourage caregivers to share cultural stories, songs, or rituals.⁣
• Use parts work to explore the “part that wants to belong” vs. “part that feels ashamed.”⁣
• Let the child lead — cultural reclamation cannot be rushed. Your excitement can not outweigh the need for pacing. ⁣

At Tree of Life Counseling Center, we believe in the power of community and sharing resources that help people feel supported, informed, and seen. ⁣

That’s why we’re sharing this free resource from .therapy for anyone navigating the process of finding the right therapeutic support for themselves or their family.⁣

In their words:⁣

“This is the guide I wish I had when I was seeking therapy for myself and my family. We were vulnerable and needed to know that we were safe. Even more than that, we needed to do important work—to have our journey to a life of freedom, creativity and togetherness seen and known.”⁣
— Mary Beth Murray, LCSW, RPT-S⁣

For 25 years, our communities carried grief without permission to name it.⁣
We were told to “move on,” “be strong,” “keep going,” “don’t make it a big deal.”, and "we don't talk about that". ⁣

𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲, 𝐈 𝐬𝐞𝐞:⁣
• Clients grieving people for decades, as they never got to mourn⁣
• A desire to uncover what taken from our communities⁣
• Families grieving the loss of the idea of safety⁣
• Immigrants communities grieving home, land, language, and promises not fulfilled⁣
• Q***r folks grieving the selves they had to hide and the communities lost due to that forced hiding.⁣

This is not weakness.⁣
This is unprocessed grief.⁣

𝐄𝐱𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬:⁣
• Losing loved ones in death or deportation without ritual⁣
• Losing time to survival mode ⁣
• Losing dreams to instability and false promises ⁣
• Losing versions of ourselves we never got to be or even imagine. ⁣

𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:⁣
What grief have you carried silently — and what would it mean to name it now? What would that feel like in your body? ⁣

You were never meant to hold this much alone.⁣

Many of us grew up in families and communities where we became the responsible one, the translator, the emotional anchor, the crisis‑manager — not because we chose it, but because someone had to.⁣

We learned early that our needs came second, third or even fourth. ⁣
We learned to stretch ourselves thin for the good of the group a large. ⁣
We learned to keep going even when we were breaking, even when we were tired. It was not a choice. ⁣

But capacity is not infinite.⁣
And pretending it is ... has a cost.⁣

𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:⁣
When the body has been in long‑term survival mode, “pushing through” becomes automatic. Irritability, overwhelm, forgetfulness, and shutdown are not character flaws — they’re signs that your nervous system has been overextended for years. You are worthy of rest and deserving of kindness. ⁣

𝐀 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:⁣
Name one place where you’ve been pretending you have more capacity than you do.⁣
Let honesty be your starting point. Without shame or judgment, just awareness. ⁣

Cultural expression is embodied: rhythm, movement, humor, ritual, nuance, relational play, and sensory traditions. Western therapy often misreads these as “dysregulation,” “avoidance,” or “off‑task behavior.”⁣

A decolonial lens recognizes cultural expression as 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. ⁣

𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐝𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 ⁣
• Use drumming, rhythm, and movement as grounding tools.⁣
•Recognizing techniques like EMDR have been practiced for generations in many cultures ⁣
• Letting children express culture and release through play cooking, dance, story, and ritual.⁣
• Validate humor and playfulness as coping strategies that are protective and insightful. ⁣
• Include open‑ended materials that allow cultural meaning to emerge.⁣
• Ask caregivers what cultural expression looks like at home.⁣
• Use body‑oriented work to support cultural regulation patterns and connect with body. ⁣
