In these trying and uncertain times that we are living in, stress and anxiety can be overwhelming. Here are 8 tips to help you cope.
Uncertain times can make your mind constantly scan for what might go wrong. The goal isn't to eliminate uncertainty—it’s to build enough stability that you can handle it.
What helps
1. Separate what you can control from what you can't. Write down your concerns, then identify one small action you can take for each controllable item. Let the rest remain unresolved for now.
2. Limit information overload. Pick one or two trustworthy sources and check them at specific times rather than repeatedly refreshing news or social media.
3. Bring yourself back to the present. Try slow breathing: inhale for 4 seconds, exhale for 6 seconds, for 2–3 minutes. Longer exhales can help your body shift out of a heightened state.
4. Keep basic routines. Regular sleep, meals, movement, sunlight, and time away from screens provide your nervous system with predictable anchors.
5. Don't argue with every anxious thought. Instead of “Everything is going to be okay,” try: “I don't know what will happen, but I can deal with the next step.”
6. Stay connected. Talk to someone you trust, even if you don't have a solution. Anxiety tends to grow in isolation.
7. Give yourself deliberate worry time. If your mind keeps returning to the same issue, set aside 15–20 minutes to think or write about it. When the worry comes up outside that window, remind yourself you'll return to it later.
8. Do something concrete and ordinary. Cooking, cleaning, walking, exercising, reading, or working on a small task can restore a sense of agency.
You don't need to solve the uncertain future today. Focus on making the next hour manageable.
