Donation is a personal choice, and everyone has the right to make an informed decision.

The decision to donate can have a positive ripple effect for the donor’s family, transplant recipients, and surrounding community.

Pediatric recipients, like Zoe, are excited to return to school, learn and grow thanks in part to donor heroes.

Together we can learn, together we can save and heal lives.

Today begins the first week of August - National Minority Donor Awareness Month.

A time to honor diverse donors, raise awareness about the need for donation in multicultural communities, lead conversations on transplant myths vs facts, and inspire sight restoring and healing action.

Help us amplify the observance - attend one of our community events, participate in a Facebook livestream, as well as like, comment and share our Facebook and Instagram posts throughout the month.

Your actions could lead someone to learn more about donation and inspire them to register to donate life.

Jonathan will always be honored, always be remembered 💙💚

Jonathan died on April 16, 2009, at 23 years old. His family remembers him for his amazing smile, his caring spirit and the way he gave to others, even when he had little left for himself.

Mary Ann and her family had never spoken with Jonathan about donation. But when they received the call asking whether they would consider donating his corneas, they barely let the caller finish. They looked at one another and, without hesitation, all said yes at the same time.

Jonathan’s corneas restored sight to two people.

For Mary Ann, that decision carries both grief and beauty. Jonathan did not get a second chance, but through his gift, two other people did. She imagines them seeing the sky, trees, flowers—and perhaps the face of someone they love.

Her message to people considering donation is:

“Get informed before you make a decision. Ask the difficult questions. Don’t just guess or go off what someone else has said.”

Last week we were excited to be back at TSTC in Harlingen. During this visit, we presented to surgical technology students.

We were able to discuss donation career options, such as cornea recovery technician, eye bank laboratory technician and others the students may not have been aware of, and now could be interested in exploring.

It’s a win-win situation - students may find themselves in a career that works directly with donation or they can use what they’ve learned to educate others on myths vs facts, to make informed decisions.

We appreciate Josie and the staff from IDEA Public Schools for kindly inviting us to join in their Backpacks for Bright Futures event at IDEA South Flores in San Antonio on Saturday, July 11th.

Our participation in healthcare, wellness and related community events helps to normalize conversations about donation, answer questions and further connect with individuals who may be donor families or awaiting a healing transplant.

It’s always touching when our eye bank staff encounters a donor family, surprised to see us at an event and they walk up with a smile, happy to share about their loved one’s donation connection….you never know where you’ll see us next

We are gleeful to have volunteers and interns support our outreach and awareness efforts. This summer we’d like to shine a gratitude light 💡 on a teen volunteer, Ellie Tun, for volunteering to scrapbook our recent Donor Hero Tribute Quilts.

We can utilize scrapbooks to educate and inspire on the Gift of Sight at locations and events where windy or rainy weather may prevent the display of the quilts.
