Back-to-School - for Parents, Too 🎒📚

Back-to-school season often comes with a long list of things to do: school supplies, schedules, lunches, drop-offs, activities, bedtime routines…

But one of the most important things your child needs is a regulated, connected parent. And that doesn’t mean you have to be perfectly calm all the time.

A few reminders as you head into a new school year:

✨ Keep routines simple and predictable. Kids feel safer when they know what to expect.

✨ Expect an adjustment period. More meltdowns, clinginess, irritability, or tiredness can be part of transitioning back into a routine.

✨ Connect before you correct. Sometimes your child needs a hug, a snack, or a few quiet minutes before they can talk about their day.

✨ Make room for their feelings. You don’t have to fix every worry. Sometimes, “That makes sense. I’m here with you,” is enough.

✨ Take care of yourself, too. You cannot pour endlessly from an empty cup. Rest, boundaries, movement, connection, and asking for help are not selfish—they’re part of caring for your family.

✨ Lower the pressure. Your child’s backpack doesn’t have to be perfectly organized, dinner doesn’t have to be homemade, and you don’t have to do everything.

The goal isn’t to create a perfect back-to-school season.
It’s to create a home where your child knows:

“I am safe. I am loved. I can have big feelings. And I don’t have to navigate them alone.” 💙

And parents—you deserve that same reminder.

Here’s to a new school year with a little more grace, a little less pressure, and plenty of connection.

DID YOU KNOW? 💭

Autism can look very different from person to person—and there is no single “look” or presentation of autism.

Autistic individuals may have differences in:

✨ Social communication and interaction
✨ Sensory processing
✨ Repetitive behaviors or routines
✨ Flexibility and transitions
✨ Special interests or areas of deep focus

Some individuals may be identified in early childhood, while others may not recognize their autistic traits until adolescence or adulthood.

At Burns Virtual Psychological Solutions, we provide comprehensive autism evaluations for children, teens, and adults. Our evaluations are designed to look at the whole person, including strengths, challenges, developmental history, and current functioning.

💡 Seeking an evaluation isn’t about finding what’s “wrong”—it’s about gaining a better understanding of how you or your child experiences and navigates the world.

As summer comes to an end and a new school year begins, transitions can bring a mix of excitement, uncertainty, stress, and everything in between. 🌿

A gentle reminder as you step into this new season: you don’t have to have it all figured out.

Give yourself—and your children—permission to adjust. New routines take time. Big feelings are part of the process. Some days may feel easier than others, and that’s okay.

Instead of striving for a “perfect” start, try approaching this season with a little more self-compassion, flexibility, and curiosity.

Ask yourself:
✨ What do I need as I adjust to this new routine?
✨ Where can I give myself (or my child) a little more grace?
✨ What would it look like to embrace this transition rather than resist it?

You don’t have to rush through the adjustment. Take it one day, one moment, and one step at a time. 🤍

There isn’t an age limit on understanding yourself. ✨

Many people think autism evaluations are only for children, but every year, more adults discover that autism helps explain experiences they’ve had their entire lives.

Whether you’re seeking answers for your child or yourself, an evaluation can provide:
✨ Understanding
✨ Validation
✨ Personalized recommendations
✨ Access to supports and accommodations
✨ Greater self-compassion

An evaluation doesn’t define you—it helps you understand yourself more fully.

We have openings for new PCIT clients! 🎉

✨ Could PCIT be the right fit for your family? ✨

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidence-based treatment that helps strengthen the parent-child relationship while reducing challenging behaviors through live parent coaching.

PCIT may be a good fit if your child:
⭐ Is between 2–7 years old
⭐ Has frequent tantrums or emotional outbursts
⭐ Struggles to follow directions
⭐ Displays aggressive or defiant behaviors
⭐ Has difficulty managing big emotions
⭐ Experiences ADHD symptoms, anxiety, or behavioral challenges

PCIT gives parents practical tools to build connection, increase cooperation, and create lasting positive change.
