🗝️ Your spinal cord has a hidden “pain gate” — and you can influence it.

Most people think pain is a straight alarm from injury to brain. Science says it’s more sophisticated.

Swipe through to learn:

• What the Gate Control Theory of Pain actually is
• How your spinal cord can turn pain signals up or down
• Why touch, movement, exercise & manual therapy work so well
• How your brain powerfully shapes what you feel
• Practical ways to reduce pain and improve function

This is one of the most important concepts I teach patients. Understanding it gives real hope and practical tools.

This is one of the most common patterns I see in patients who walk into my clinic:

One shoulder sitting higher than the other.

Forward head posture creeping in.
Hips tilted or rotated.

Tight muscles constantly pulling the spine out of its natural position.
And over time… it never stays in just one place.

Patients tell me about:

• Neck pain that won’t quit
• Shoulder tension that makes desk work miserable
• Chronic mid-back or low-back pain
• Hip discomfort, clicking, or tightness
• Knee pain that seems to appear “out of nowhere”
• Even foot pain or aching arches

Here’s the truth your body already knows:

It works as one connected kinetic chain.

When one area shifts out of alignment, everything else compensates to keep you upright and moving. That’s exactly why stretching, rubbing, or “cracking” only the painful spot usually gives temporary relief at best.

If your body feels uneven, twisted, tight, or constantly compressed no matter what you try…

It’s rarely just the spot that hurts.
It’s the entire chain reacting.

Save this if you’ve ever felt like your body is “off” and you can’t figure out why.

Tag someone who’s always rolling their shoulders or cracking their back but never feels better.

I’m sharing this because the more honest we can be about the weight of this work, the better we can support each other — and the better patients can understand what really goes into their care.

🤔 Do herniated discs actually heal by themselves?

Short answer: Yes — in a surprising number of cases.

As a spine surgeon, I see the fear on patients’ faces when they first see “herniated disc” on their MRI. The good news? Your body often has this handled through a natural process.

Special immune cells (macrophages) break down and reabsorb the herniated material over time. Research shows overall resorption rates of 66–76%, with sequestrated and extruded discs doing even better (up to 93–96% in some studies).

Symptoms frequently improve in weeks to a couple of months, even when full imaging resolution takes longer.

The key is understanding your specific situation, giving it time, and following the right conservative plan. Surgery is an excellent tool when truly needed — but it’s not automatic for most people.

If you’re dealing with back or leg pain from a disc issue right now, know this: improvement is common, and your body is designed to heal.

🧠“ The cranio-cervical junction appears normal.”

This small sentence in an MRI report is easy to miss — but for many patients, it’s one of the most reassuring lines they can read.

While words like “bulge,” “stenosis,” or “compression” naturally grab our attention, this one tells us something important: the critical area where the brain meets the upper spinal cord is structurally sound.

Not every finding in a report is alarming. Some are quiet reassurances.

Follow for more plain-English explanations of spine imaging and what the findings actually mean.

🧠 The Brachial Plexus: Your Arm’s Command Center

This detailed illustration shows the brachial plexus — a complex network of nerves that originates from spinal cord segments C5-T1.

These nerves travel through the neck and shoulder to deliver both motor and sensory innervation to the entire upper limb.

The diagram clearly maps the classic pathway: Roots → Trunks → Divisions → Cords → Terminal Branches

Major terminal nerves shown:

• Musculocutaneous
• Axillary
• Radial
• Median
• Ulnar

Yellow = nerves
Red = muscles

Surrounding cervical vertebrae, bones, and muscles provide essential anatomical context.
Understanding this anatomy is critical for evaluating shoulder, arm, and hand conditions — from nerve entrapments and injuries to cervical radiculopathy.

Note: Yes, there is a C8 nerve root. Although humans only have 7 cervical (neck) vertebrae, there are 8 pairs of cervical nerve roots (C1 through C8).
