A familiar landmark was carefully transported from the North Side to its new home at a South Side hospital under construction.

The 14,000-pound Flor de Esperanza sculpture was transported Saturday morning from a storage site near Blossom Athletic Center to the future site of University Health’s Palo Alto Hospital.

The 23-foot-tall steel sculpture, designed by artist Sebastián and painted bright yellow, was previously displayed at University Hospital in the South Texas Medical Center. Sebastián also created the iconic red Torch of Friendship downtown, which was presented to San Antonio in 2002.

It was a great weekend connecting with our community at State Representative Philip Cortez, Ph.D., District 117's Back to School Fair!

The event welcomed over 500 attendees, where we had the opportunity to share exciting updates about our new Palo Alto Hospital and highlight Vida, our multi-specialty health center, which is now open and seeing patients. Our vaccination team and blood donor bus were also on-site providing health resources to help families prepare for the school year.

We are excited to continue supporting students, families and the community as we head into the school year! 🍎✏️💙

The Flower of Hope has bloomed again, this time as a brand-new South Side landmark! 🌻

Today, Flor de Esperanza by renowned Mexican artist Sebastián was installed at Palo Alto Hospital following extensive conservation and cleaning.

Standing 23 feet tall and weighing 14,000 pounds, the sculpture required a 135-ton crane to carefully place it in its new home. Now, this symbol of hope will continue inspiring patients, visitors and team members for years to come on San Antonio’s South Side. 💙

The future of healthcare on the Southside is taking shape. University Health's Palo Alto Hospital opens spring 2027, bringing urgent, chronic, and preventative care right to the community. The hospital will also feature the Institute for Public Health, committed to supporting the health and wellness of residents across Bexar County. Access to care shouldn't require a long drive, and soon, it won't! Image by .
